Exclamation I did something really stupid, & in a way self harm... - November 15th 2010, 04:54 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of suicide, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread therefore might not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I used a knife to do a mild cut on my upper arm just to see what would happen, yes i know i was stupid. Also because i wasn't thinking properly, and because i'm super stressed and depressed, and i'm upset about a lot of things, and no i really don't want to talk to anyone about it. I know i don't need to go to a Psych Clinic because i didn't do a severe harm to myself and i stopped myself right away. It looks like a cat scratch and there is no blood, i cleaned it with soap, and then used a alch. wipe and took one of my medications that can be used as an antibiotics, and i also put a band aid on.

Do you think I'm going to get an infection?
We all make mistakes, and mine was a stupid one. & i definitely am never doing it again.

Hey there,

I am sorry to hear you are going through a tough time. You are not stupid! I think we all make mistakes but the main thing is that we learn from these. I know when I feel overwhelmed by everything I end up doing things I regret. But I think it is about taking a step back and taking a deep breath. I know it is ever so easy just to react and do something when everything feels too much. But when you feel like that you have to tell yourself that things will be ok and you will get through it because you will!

I am glad you have told your mum though and I hope she is being supportive. I don't think you will get an infection because you seem to have cleaned the wound well after. But just keep an eye on it and if you do self harm in the future try to always use something clean.

Stay strong.

Hey:
I most definately do NOT think that you are stupid, everyone makes mistakes.
I am really glas that you decided that you were not going to do that again. It is a terrible habit to get into. I would have never in the first place told you that you needed a clinic, I am going to suggest seeing a therapist though, because she/he can help you work through why you are depressed and hopefully get rid of these feelings. As far as getting an infection, I would say that if the cut is not too deep and you cleaned it. I would say keep it covered with maybe a band aid for a few days, but it will probably not get infected.
Take care,
Trish

No, you won't get an infection.
I used to use manicure tools, well...ones that hadn't been used before, I used to scrape my arms up pretty good with them, never washed them off or anything, and never got an infection. They heal up fine. I purpously did that to myself, I wanted to hurt myself, as in you sound like you just did it just because, not because you really wanted to hurt yourself. Trust me, don't start making it a habit. It's really dumb and it doesn't make you feel any better to cut yourself.

You are not stupid and I'm glad that you decided not to do it ever again. I deal with self-harm on a daily basis and it has taken over my life, it's a terrible addiction. It sounds like you took care of the cut pretty well so I don't think you will get an infection. I really do think you should talk to someone though, to help you with your depression. If you ever want to talk feel free to PM me.
