Where did you learn it? - November 23rd 2010, 02:13 AM

I have struggled with this since I was in third grade... I am 22 now. But I didn't know anyone who struggled with it, till I became a youth leader and met high school girls struggling with it. No one taught me, it just kind of happened. So I was wondering... where did you learn it from?

Actually, I had a fascination with cutting when I was in my early teens (13ish)? I would spend hours looking up pictures and things. Not entirely sure how that got started. I think I just stumbled upon it one day.

Ironically, I never cut back then though. I started cutting several years later, when I was struggling with problems, and I remembered reading about how cutting relieves stress and whatnot.

How far do I have to go to make you understand?
I wanna make this work so much it hurts...
But I just can't keep on giving, go on living with the way things are.
So I'm gonna walk away, and it's up to you to say how far...

It's all over. TV, the internet, people talk about it at school. I have to wonder how anyone could not know about SH by now.

I haven't SHed in years but when I did my boyfriend at the time taught me I guess. He was cutting and I found out, I helped him to stop but as soon as I hit a rough patch it was the first solution I came to cos it had made him feel better.

Honestly, I don't remember where I first heard it from. I've known about SH for a long time now. I'm also curious about this ice and salt thing mentioned above.

Re: Where did you learn it? - November 23rd 2010, 05:38 AM

I saw it in a magazine in the beginning of middle school, but I didn't start until about a year later. My best friend had recently been diagnosed with cancer and, during my English class one day in 8th grade, I got a paper cut. Something in my mind was triggered by this and the rest is history. I've cut ever since.

But, in the time after, I've read books about it, seen it on television and in movies, and even talked about it a little bit in school.

i am not my scars and my history
i am, i am, i am who i am...i am who i am.
there are true things inside of me;
i have been afraid to see.

Learned about it: I never paid attention to it until my friend started. Then she told me about it...
Without her pressuring me, I wondered if it would work for me.
I've been cutting ever since...It only started in the 7th grade, though, and now I'm in 9th. It's been a little less than 2 yrs since I learned.

Probably one of the worst ways to find out -

When I was in 6th grade, a kid in my class self-harmed, and would show their scars publicly - so there was a lot of gossip, and those who didn't know would ask about it - people said that it was because they were depressed.

I learned about it by hearing about it in school and through gossip-y friends.

I self harmed in more minor ways for years - as in my entire life. Cutting was just the natural progression. It just happened. I guess I'd probably heard about it, but it wasn't like I thought about it until I did it.

I had been doing a more vague and timid version of it until I read an article in my elementary school's monthly newsletter describing the warning signs of it. lol

I never learnt it from anywhere - I just started to do it. I scratched and bit myself, but nothing too deep or dangerous. I only started doing more dangerous things after I joined this site and learned more here. I guess it just felt more acceptable and because so many people said how good it was, I did it more. I don't self harm at all now, though... there's no need.

From the age I was three, I had to help my my mum. She got in to self harm then and did it for years and still goes through phases of doing it. I think that's how I found about it.

But I started when I was thirteen.

my friend in high school used to cut in class and stuff and then i just started, i saw how it made my friend feel and thought it would help me, tried it and liked it, and have been cutting for the past 4 years. i think that if i had never seen my friend cut in class i would never have started cutting but i saw my friend cut in class several times a year or so down the line i tried it and i liked it and it seemed to help. and as far as i know my friend still cuts. and i also watched the 6th sense and saw the 'kitchen dinners not ready scene' and i think that made me want to do it more.

Okay. I'd like to point out that the media is NOT to blame for SH. And awareness is NOT a bad thing.

Anyways. In all honesty, my "friends" would joke (I'm not even really sure why, mostly because I hate the word emo so much) and would make cutting jokes to me. One day I was upset and I thought "well, maybe I should."

"'Colie, you should never be surprised when people treat you with respect. You should expect it.'
I shook my head. 'You don't know--' I began. But, as usual, she didn't let me finish.
'Yes,' she said simply, 'I do know. I've watched you, Colie. You walk around like a dog waiting to be kicked. And when someone does, you pout and cry like you didn't deserve it.'
'No one deserves to be kicked,' I said.
'I disagree,' she said flatly. 'You do if you don't think you're worth any better...'"

um. i was 10 or 11 when i started cutting. no one had ever told me about it. the rush of getting hurt had always brought me relief, and so...i just thought i'd try it? i don't really know how it started. it just kind of escalated from there. found out about salt&ice from a friend about a year later.

I started when I was twelve, and it was just something that happened. I hadn't heard about it before that, and the urge really made no logical sense to me. It was just there one day, so I went with it.
