Question Question... Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. - December 21st 2010, 05:12 AM

I'm in my school's varsity winterguard (which is a huge deal for me, because I missed both seasons last year due to a knee injury and then kidney problems). And we're doing a show called "This Too Shall Pass", which is basically thunder, rain, then the song "After The Storm" by Mumford and Sons. (Lyrics posted below)
The song is supposed to be uplifting, but it makes me nearly cry. Having to hear for almost 4 hours straight on Tuesday/Thursday nights and 3 hours straight on Saturday mornings makes it hard for me to keep my emotions in check. I just want to start crying. And I've been having even harder of a time with cutting/staying positive. Any suggestions on how to get over the issues I have with the song?

And after the storm,
I run and run as the rains come
And I look up, I look up,
on my knees and out of luck,
I look up.

Night has always pushed up day
You must know life to see decay
But I won't rot, I won't rot
Not this mind and not this heart,
I won't rot.

And I took you by the hand
And we stood tall,
And remembered our own land,
What we lived for.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And now I cling to what I knew
I saw exactly what was true
But oh no more.
That's why I hold,
That's why I hold with all I have.
That's why I hold.

I won't die alone and be left there.
Well I guess I'll just go home,
Or God knows where,
Because death is just so full and mine so small.
Well I'm scared of what's behind and what's before.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

And there will come a time, you'll see, with no more tears.
And love will not break your heart, but dismiss your fears.
Get over your hill and see what you find there,
With grace in your heart and flowers in your hair.

With grace in your heart
And flowers in your hair

Re: Question... Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. - December 22nd 2010, 04:36 AM

What I'm about to say probably won't help, but I had a problem kind of like this? We played a song about a person (not sure who it was) what died and such (it was a memorial-type thing-ish) and it made like, half of the band cry including our director. And I wanted to cry but I never did, and it didn't bother me to the extend of wanting to cut (definitely not). But still. I used that intense emotion (we all did) towards playing, and it sounded like 1,000,000 times better or more. And when we played it at festival we made nearly our whole audience cry. So I guess my point is... to use that emotion to drive you to make your performance better. If you use all of your energy performing, then you should be completely drained. And you'll just feel good about how you did (especially if you're in competition). I've been in winter drum line for 4 years, and we've traveled with our 'A' guard (the better one), and trust me... We had to watch them A LOT. But I guess just look at it in a positive experience, and then there's no reason to do that. Well. Sorry if I didn't help much, that's just what I think and that's the only advice I can give you. Good luck.

Open Your Eyes, the past couple of practices have gone really well since I've tried your suggestion. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. I've been catching higher/better tosses, and my instructor is like so much less disappointed in me than at the beginning of the season. Thanks so much!!!
