I think a lot of it depends on how comfortable you feel yourself. I have scars on my thighs but if I'm around people that I feel comfortable with I feel able to swim and sunbathe without covering them. Before I felt comfortable enough to do that though I used to wear board shorts to swim in, maybe that's something you could do? I once wrote an article on ways to cover up in the Summer which might be worth a read? Here's the link if you do! Click! Hope this helps a little

I completely understand! I have the same problem with scars on my thighs because of SHing. Board shorts that come down to the knees are my best friend and they usually look really cute too. But like Ellie said, if there are some people you are comfortable around just have confidence that you are beautiful even with scars and wear what you want to wear.

Hey Board shorts are a great idea!!
However, I have scars on my arms, and I've found that people don't really take much notice; I've had a few people ask but, 'It was an accident' usually shuts them up. I always feel completely paranoid about my scars, but very few people have actually ever commented on them.

Thats right.
I got away with it all and I'm still alive.

Most of the scars on my legs are on my ankles or upper thighs/hips. If I put on a pair of board shorts (the shorter ones, not to your knees) everything is concealed. If I'm with friends, I usually don't mind letting it all be shown.

I don't do a lot of swimming, however, so this isn't a big problem for me.

Thanks so much y'all, the boardshorts thing sounds smart and the link was helpful too. I'm gonna try the boardshorts and scar concealer. Thankyou!

I understand how you feel. I felt the same way you feel when I cut. The key is that you just to accept yourself for you are and what you've done. It takes a while, but its worth it. You could also try scar cream to reduce how visible the scars are.

Re: Swimming with scars??? - December 22nd 2010, 04:27 AM

Just to echo what has already been said... I work at a summer camp and swim almost every day of the summer. I've noticed that once I'm in water, my scars aren't nearly as visible/people don't think to notice. However, until that point, I tend to keep my towel wrapped around me. My scars are in very similar areas as the opening poster's.

Board shorts also work well, as already stated. Or, depending on what you do, guy's swim trunks with your swimsuit top or just over a one piece works, too.

Most makeup washes off in water/before even getting in the pool. So covering it becomes more difficult.

Just some food for thought on the matter that I've observed.

i am not my scars and my history
i am, i am, i am who i am...i am who i am.
there are true things inside of me;
i have been afraid to see.

I agree with the board shorts idea, they work well.
However, once swimming, most people don't pay attention to the fact you have scars.
I've gone to summer camps over the past few summers and no one ever asked me about my scars or anything. Also, until you get to the water, you can wear a towel around you that way no one notices them.
I hope this helps.

These are really things you need to take into consideration when you decide to cut. Yes, it will scar. These are part of the consequences of your actions. That's something I had to learn the hard way whenever I cut as deeply as I wanted. I have to live with ugly old scars, and I have to deal with people being nosy and looking/asking. Because if you love to swim or wear certain clothes or whatever, and your scars end up being exposed....well that's not really something you can hide very well or for very long. It's a part of you, you have to live with it. As long as they're scars and not...well, cuts...in the end you shouldn't have any major problems dealing with an issue from the past. Cover it the best you can, but don't stress over it.

Hey, board shorts are a great one. I have men's board shorts that go to my knees, and they actually look pretty cute hanging on my hips with a tankini top. And they cover up quite well, too. I love them, personally, not only because of the scars, but also because I hate my fat legs. Haha.

Board shorts are the greatest for that Also, you will find that people who are like 'muggles' to the self harming world won't think twice about it, and probably wont even notice. If they ask, and you say you fought a rosebush and lost or something, odds are they will just shrug it off! Of course if they are your closest friends and they know you have some issues, they may question, but they won't go and yell it to the world!

Of course, no cutting is the best option , but once its done its done
