I don't know if it's self harm or not... - February 25th 2009, 07:33 PM

... But i keep biting myself. Hard. With the intention of causing pain. I did it earlier today and the bite mark was there for about 15 minutes. I jhave no idea why I keep doing this, but I keep on doing it. Like before, with the elastic band, I like the little bit of pain that it causes. Any replies would be nice, but I know this isn't exactly easy to respond to.

Thanks for reading

Hey Jessy,
Anything that you do to intentionally cause pain is labeled as self-harm. I'd recommend finding distractions to keep yourself away from it before it gets any worse. There are some really good stickies on the self-harm forum with different distractions that could help. Also try opening up to someone if you feel that would help. It can be really difficult at first but it will help you get through this whether it's a parent, guidance counselor, relative or anyone you trust. PM me anytime if you want to talk.

Yes, Jessy.
What you're doing is classed as self harm as you are biting yourself to cause pain. Self harm describes a wide range of things that people do to themselves in a deliberate way.

hmm... but not that many of the distractions can be done in the middle of an RE lesson. Aw crap, I'm doing it again I do it without thinking, almost. The tiny bit of pain feels right. Weird, I know.

Hiya Jessie

Any action that intentionly involves causing pain or marks to yourself is self harm, wether it be a bite, or head bang, etc

If you want to stop doing this to yourself, then you could go to someone you trust & confide in them.

I do this too when I'm stressed, stops me from cutting.

You're not doing any serious damage to yourself, but its still causing pain for yourself, which isn't good. Try to figure out why you do it and then focus on solving that, there must be a reason why you want the pain.

Re: I don't know if it's self harm or not... - February 25th 2009, 07:58 PM

I think a part of why I do it is because it takes my mind off of other things...

And as for telling someone I trust about it, I don't think that'd make me stop.

Thanks for all the replies

Sometimes when we try to avoid thinking about things, they come back stronger. If you allow yourself to think them and then accept that those thoughts are there and try to deal with them, its a whole lot better.
Unfortunately avoiding the problem doesnt make it go away.

i don't do it to stop myself thinking about my problems (much). I have an unhealthy obsession with my ficitonal characters, the biting stops me thinking bout them or anything els. often i find myself doing it, but not especially hard, and then make myself bite harder, so that it hurts. but I'm seeing the school nurse enxt thursday, so i might bring this up

Hey, Jessy. Like everyone else has said, I think it is classified as Self Harm. Talking to your school nurse is a good idea, if you want to stop doing this to yourself. And maybe when you want to stop thinking about things like these fictional characters, do something else to distract yourself? Write, read, or try anything else written in the self harm distraction forum, maybe some of those ideas could help? Good luck. xx

Hey Jesse. As alot of people have said above me, yes this is self harm. Self harm covers alot of things such as burning, pulling your hair, banging your head against a wall or the more common cutting but yes biting is classififed as self harm. Self harm is anything you do to intentally cause yourself pain. I would recommend checking out the alternative thread in this forum, to try and kick the self harming before it gets to bad!
PM me anytime about anything,
