Super strong urge. Help? - January 7th 2011, 04:49 AM

So I haven't cut all day but right now I really want to. I'm desperate for some serious pain. But I'm trying to stop. How do you attempt to get through the times when you want it bad?

Re: Super strong urge. Help? - January 7th 2011, 05:15 AM

It's not always possible or practical to do this, but something I do is just leave the area. Go for a walk. Or if you can't do that, at least leave the room you're in.

You don't have to go anywhere in particular either. I just keep walking for as long as I have the feeling. I like to go to public places, when possible, like a bookstore or the mall. It doesn't make the feelings go away immediately, but eventually I get distracted by something (a book, a hot guy, a cute stuffed animal, ect.) and I realize the urge has passed.

Being in public helps though (or anywhere where there are other people -- even family members or friends), since cutting is not something you can just do in front of everyone. It's good when the urge is bad.

At least, this is what I do. It may or may not work for you, but I thought I'd mention it.

How far do I have to go to make you understand?
I wanna make this work so much it hurts...
But I just can't keep on giving, go on living with the way things are.
So I'm gonna walk away, and it's up to you to say how far...

It's really late (like so late it's technically early). My parents would lose it if I was out of bed. So in general that's great advice but for now I don't know what to do. I don't know why I don't just give myself what I want and be done with the urge for now

Well, since you are on the computer, do you happen to have any websites you like to go to that are fun and relaxing (and that don't remind you of self-harm)? Sometimes I just make myself stay on the computer, playing some stupid game, until the urge passes.

I don't know. I'm trying to read right now but I can't even proccess any of the words. It's not like there's anything to distract me from it. I'm a super multitasker which in this scenario is bad because I can do one thing and think about another too much. Do you think nail digging counts as an alternative? I'm not sure if it would be enough but maybe

Nail digging is a form of self-harm.

I would recommend an interactive game instead of trying to read. When you have a lot on your mind, it's hard to focus on a book. But as long as you keep your fingers and eyes busy, it's okay to let your mind wander. You can think about self-harm without actually doing it. And even if you're thinking about it while doing something else, eventually you'll find that the urge will go away.

Well there alot of different ways.like I snap a rubber band or I talk to someone but you can draw with a red marker where you want to cut you can get mind of it by tv or video games or you can write in a journal. Is there a reason why you triggered it? If you ever need to talk to some one you only have to pm me

Thankyou, that's really sweet. I've tried most of those and sometimes writing on myself helps. As far as the trigger, I basically am the trigger, so it's a bit hard to get away from. Welcome to TH by the way =)
