Wrists. - February 3rd 2011, 01:08 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I thought this might be triggering, not completely sure though. Just was on the same side when I marked it as such.

But i have a question about cutting wrists. [I usually do it on my thigh or fingertips.] Does that open up veins? What happens if a vein gets opened up?

Thanks. And if you were wondering, I wasn't asking this with intent to start on my wrists. I was just curious.

Okay. First of all, I'm VERY glad you're not curious about doing this; if you were, I don't know what sort of answer I could give and be able to sleep tonight.

Wrists are up there as one of the worst places you can cut. You have major arteries, major veins, and very important muscles and tendons in your wrist. We'll ignore the last two for now since you didn't ask about them.

I do want to talk about arteries though. If you happen to cut an artery, arteries contain very pressurized blood. If you manage to even partially nick an artery, the bleeding is VERY difficult to stop, and will come out in rhythmic bursts as your heart beats blood through them.

Veins, on the other hand, contain blood at low pressure. Therefore, if you cut a vein, blood won't burst out, but will flow out steadily. Doctors draw blood using a vein in your arm. This kind of bleeding can also be extremely severe, but venal bleeding is generally (GENERALLY) less dangerous than arterial bleeding, and is somewhat easier to stop.

And of course, this goes without saying -- please try to stop cutting. It's not a healthy habit, Becca.

PM me if you ever need anything or want to talk.

Thanks for answering. (:

I asked because there's a girl in my class and she is quite open about the fact she used to cut her arms.

You should go to the hospital/doctor.
