Common? - February 14th 2011, 03:54 PM

All right, so before I came across this site, I was completely oblivious to the fact that so many people self harm. I wasn't oblivious to the fact it existed. The first and really only time I ever heard about SH was actually through an episode of 7th Heaven. But 7th Heaven is so censored in many ways, so of course it wasn't brought into great detail. I just remembering thinking, "Wow, people actually do that?"

It makes me wonder...do people I know hurt themselves, and I'm simply unaware of it? Am I truly that naive?

Am I alone in feeling this way?

Hey, I actually own that episode of 7th Heaven Anyway, I'm not sure how common it is, but it's possible that people you know do it and you'd have no idea. It doesn't necessairly mean that they do though.

I think there is a possibility they do, but they might not; it is one of those things that is hard to tell, as people cover it up. As a SHer, when i came to this site it really proved to me that there were other people and i didn't have to feel ashamed and alone; but i didn't realise as did you, how many people SHed.

Honestly in some ways I still think it's like that, even though so many people on TH deal with self harm. I don't know anyone in RL who self harms. I know a couple people who have done it once or twice, but not seriously. So I get kind of confused about it sometimes. But I suppose self harm isn't something you are ever really open about, so there are probably a lot more people I've met doing it than I think.

I used to know a lot of people in real life that self harmed. Not so much anymore though.

I am a self-harmer and I know many self-harmers and I know that most of us do our best to keep it a secret. Don't quote me on this but I think the statistic is 1 out of 200 people self-harm so it's very likely that you know someone who does or used to self-harm.

Hey Nicole.

It doesn't make you naive for not noticing, even if people in your life are self harming. Many people who self harm hide it from other people, so it's not surprising you've never really come across it in real life.

How common self harm actually is can't really be determined, since, as I said before, not everybody who self harms seeks treatment for it or is open about it.

Anyway, you're definitely not along in feeling this way, and I think it's nice you care so much about others.

Take care.

It's not rare, let me tell you. There are a lot of ways to SH, some that you'd never think it would be considered under that category. For an example, pulling your hair on purpose because of stress/anger. I believe my did that.... Weird much, didn't think it's SHing. Truly, I didn't know I SH or self injure. But when I found out in time, decided to stop as well.
If you're talking only about deeper things, such as burning skin/cutting, that is a bit rare. I actually don't know many who do that, and no one In real life. Though I do know a couple of scratchers.

Yeah, well okay lets go with MOST OF MY FRIENDS cut... so do i. I dont know, although its just sorta the group im in. Some do it worse than others. :P It overall ISNT that common though, i just seem to click with those who do... cause welll idk i do it too.

Overall, not that common, like seriously. Dont go around accusing ur friends of selfharming... most likely... they dont

Hey Nicole.

You aren't naive at all. A lot of people who self-harm hide it extremely well so that no one knows.

I, personally, know a lot of people who have self-harmed. It's more common than we think it is.

Take care,

Re: Common? - February 18th 2011, 10:44 PM

I've honestly never known anyone in real life who was a self-harmer besides myself. (that I'm aware of) The closest I've known was a couple kids who cut themselves for "fun" and attention. But other than that, none. I'm sure they're out there, (obviously), but have not personally known anyone with the habit in any form.

You're not naive. When I first fell into the habit I didn't know it was a real thing or what/why I was doing it. I just did it. Then oneday I happened upon something that made me realize what it was, did some research, and eventually found twloha which lead me to TH. You won't know until you learn about things, and that in no way makes you naive. It just means you weren't aware, and now you are. And you're not alone no matter how rare it seems. We're all here to help and support eachother.
