Exclamation Talk me into this - March 3rd 2011, 01:28 AM

I know I need to tell my therapist about my cutting. But I an really scared. It's only gonna be our second session. So as you can imagine the whole set up still freaks me out. I made it a little easier on myself by faking sick so that this session will be over the phone instead of in her office. She's calling in an hour and my parents are making sure I take it and use up the full session time. That way she won't be able to look at me and I won't have to stare at the floor. Anyhow...I've never said it out loud. The only people who I know I told with handmotions...I've never SAID I cut or am a cutter or anything about it. So I'm terrified and I don't know if I can do this

Hey there,

I know exactly how you feel. When I was in therapy I was constantly staring down at the floor because it was hard to make eye contract with my therapist.

So he/she isn't there to make you feel uncomfortable. I know its hard to tell them things right now, so right now I'd just take this time to slowly ease into telling her things. You don't have to tell her if you are uncomfortable. You can even tell them you have something to tell them but you just can't yet. They will respect your wishes.

It will take about a month or so to really begin feeling more comfortable with them. If time passes and you still aren't able to talk about it, then maybe try seeing a different therapist. The important thing is that you get the help that you need.

Best of luck Blair, I hope everything is okay

And here you are living, despite it all.

I agree with Melody. Although I've never been in therapy myself, I know how difficult it can be to tell someone something even if you know that you can trust them. Don't push yourself to tell your therapist till you are ready. They certainly aren't forcing you to tell them everything about yourself. Take it one day at a time and when you're ready, you'll know.
