Nothing helps - March 9th 2011, 05:47 AM

Ever since I was little I've self harmed. I used to bite and scratch myself until I bled or skin came off. I'd smash my head against walls and scream till I couldn't speak without intense pain. I've starved myself, smothered myself with pillows until I blacked out, and I finally started cutting last summer. It started making things worse. Our knives were dull so the cuts weren't deep enough and I felt like even more of a failure. Then I found a collection of pocket knives in my parents' room. At first it made everything feel better. I'd get in a certain mood and then I'd slice the pain away. But now I don't know what to do. Ive felt horrible all day. Cutting was only a temporary relief and now I have no access to the knives as my mom is sleepin right next to them. I can't sleep, I feel horribly sick, and I'm starting to think that maybe I need help. But I can't tell anyone I know and hiding the scars is getting harder.

Hey sweetie. I just wanna say it's very brave of you to reach out in someway to get help. It's one giant leap in the right direction!

I know that it is probably really hard for you right now because it sounds like you've never been in a situation where you haven't been able to SH. Do you have anything that can distract you at all? Music? A notebook? Maybe a video game or the TV? Just something to get your mind off of it till your urge is more tolerable and you can get some sleep.

There are also a list of alternatives, I believe it may be sticked here on this forum. If you want, you can PM me if you need to talk anytime.

Hey huni..Hope you're feelin better. I agree with Judith. There are lots of distractions you can use but the problem is finding the right one to help you unwind and release all the hurt, pain and anger. You can try listening to music, going for a run, jumping in a cold shower. A really good one is using ice-cubes. If you rub an ice-cube on your skin where you want to cut it gives the same kinda impulses as cutting because it kinda numbs your nerve endings and makes you feel better. This a really good way to get relief when you need to SH, even when cutting doesn't work anymore, so maybe its worth a go.. Take care x
