Psychological Profile Of Cutters:People Who Self Harm - March 14th 2011, 10:57 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Cutters are:

All different kinds of people, with all different kinds of backgrounds,in all different kinds of social classes...

There are not many unifying factors among people who self injure.most of them are women, but not all,and most of them begin to self injure in their early teenage years..but not all.

Chances are that more men self injure then we know about, but are less likely to seek medical and emtional support...

People who self harm generally share these characteristics:

.strongly dislike/invalidate themselves
.are hypersenstive to rejection
.are chronically angry,usually at themsleves
.tend to supress their anger
.have high levels of aggressive feelings, which they dissaprove of strongly and often supress or direct inward
.are more impulsive and more lacking in impulse control
.tend to act in accordance to their mood of the momment
.are depressed and suicidal/self destructive
.suffer chronic anxiety
.tend towards irritablilty
.do not see themselves as skilled at coping
.do not have a flexible repertorie of coping skills
.do not think they have much control over how/wether they cope with life
.tend to be avoidant
.do not see themselves as empowered
.Abuse(emotional,sexual...etc)

Unfortuantely...people are ignorant about self injury..many of them think that self injury is about getting attention...However this is rarely the case...

people self injure to relieve tension and unwanted emotions.if someone is commiting self injury...then they are probably asking for help and need the attention...

PS:its a known fact that people(espeically teens)..who self harm are twice as likely to either attempt or commit suicide

I hate that parents are so ignorent with self harm. Friends understand and support you, parent just get angry and hate you for it even if its not your fault.
