Scars still itch? - March 16th 2011, 03:52 AM

its been a year and 3 months since I've done any cutting. Some of the scars from when a few years ago get really itchy every once in awhile. Is that normal? If it is how do I get them to stop itching so bad?

Hey there[:
Sometimes old scars will itch, and that's generally due to either an infection or new cell growth. If you've noticed any pain, change in color, heat, puffiness or swelling, then it's very possible that the cause is an infection, in which case you should seek help from a doctor immediately. Old scars can become the site of a new infection. But oftentimes, the tissues that form over a cut are inconsistent... which will cause the different layers of scar tissue to stretch at different rates as you grow. That can definitely result in itching or discomfort. For this (if your symptoms do not include heat, change in color, pain, puffiness or swelling) then you should be okay with applying a hypo-alerginic lotion. If this doesn't help, then you may want to see about getting an itch-relief ointment.
Hope that helps
Ada

Do you pick at them? Are they purple, or very dark? I'm worried that they might be infected. I don't know how severe they are. But don't mess with them. Let them heal. If it gets worse, go see a doctor.

There's a fair few threads on this, I made one of them myself.
Try massaging them and keeping the skin around them moisturised.

It could also itch if you have urges to cut or if you're in stressful situations.. Sometimes it could be more of a psychological thing than an actual itch.

Oh hun! Trust me, I hadn't cut in well over two years (until recently, that is), and trust me, even those old things STILL itch! It's usually a good sign unless of course you're experiencing chronic itching, discomfort, inflammation, change(s) in color, etc., etc.

By the way, congratulations on the one year and three months! Quite an accomplishment!

Well good on you for remaining strong! I haven't cut in SO long and I just recently started again--it's quite devastating and totally not worth the emotional pain in renders in loved ones. Trust me.
