I did a stupid thing...should I tell them? - April 1st 2011, 11:45 PM

My family think that I've stopped SH, I no longer live at home so it's pretty easy to let them keep thinking that.
The problem is I recently cut up my arms without thinking - whilst drunk (I usually do my legs because it's less visible) and I have a family holiday with them coming up....should I try to hide them or should I just tell them about it? I really don't know how I'd go about doing either.
I don't think they ever properly came to terms with it whilst I was still at home, they didn't understand that, let alone finding out that it doesn't simply go away because I'm a few years older.

If I was in your position, I would tell them.
It;s better to just be honest then them somehow find out.

Hey Stevie.

Honestly, I think it would be better for you to be open about it, rather than try and hide it or lie about it.

You could try writing them a letter, if that would be easier than telling them face-to-face. You could find/make a pamphlet for them, with information about self harm, and how they can help. Or you can just be upfront and ask, 'Can we talk about something?', then tell them.

They're your family, and they're bound to love you regardless. Even if they don't quite understand, they'll want to help, and if they react badly, it's because they care about you. You should give them the benefit of the doubt here, and let them in.

Good luck.
