Hurting myself - May 8th 2011, 05:15 PM

Whenever I get angry at myself or other people, or sad, or just overwhelmed, I try to hurt myself. I used to scratch myself with pins and cut my arms. I don't do that anymore; now I just bang my head against the wall or the table and hit and kick myself. I am really scared to tell anyone about it beacuse I'm afraid they'll think that I'm just trying to get attention. I'm scared to tell my mom because I've heard her talking about it and she's sort of scared of it. In some ways I am trying for attention: I'm desparate that someone will notice it, but whenever my friends see my bruises/scratches I get really ashamed and don't know what to say!!
Please help!!

First of all, you need to stop hurting yourself. I know it's easier said then done but whenever you start to feel like that, remove yourself from the situation if possible, take some deep breaths and try to calm yourself down and distract yourself from how you're feeling.

You shouldn't be ashamed, everyone has their problems and everyone deals with them in different ways. Admitting that you need help is the first step, the next one is getting that help. If you feel that you can talk to any of your friends or anyone that you're close to for that matter then talk to them, tell them how you're feeling and they might be able to help you or get you the help that you need.

If you ever need someone to talk to, my PM box is always open x

Well, like Heartlesss had said, harming yourself doesn't help, it might give you an adreneline rush, and trust me I understand, I used to leave marks on myself, but you need to surround yourself with good people.

Whenever you get upset or angry talk to someone, tell them how you're doing weather it be on here, in real life it has no difference you need to know someone here is here for you and understands what you're going through.

I know the feeling, but as I'm sure you know, it's not a healthy way to deal with those emotions. You've done the right thing to come on here, reach out to us and ask for help. That's the first step to recovery.

Personally, I think the best thing to do is to find a different way to cope with your feelings. Different SH alternatives work for different people. You can find some alternatives listed here: http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f12-s...ves-self-harm/

Before you can address self harm, you need to address the emotion behind it. The problem is that a harmful way of coping can become an addiction, so try to find something that won't hurt you: write down how you feel, go for a walk, listen to music, anything that will take your mind off it. Take it one step at a time: if you can avoid SH urges for a day, you can make it another day, and another. I know it will be hard but I believe you can do this. Take care, and PM if you need to. <3
