Question Is it still considered self-harm...? - July 13th 2011, 07:18 AM

So, I've had a pretty stressful summer. I've been upset to the point where I'm just sobbing for what seems like hours. During these times, I've noticed that I tend to scratch myself. I know in the past when I was a kid, that I've scratched myself when I was angry, hoping to get attention to show how angry I was, but this time it was different.

Once, I was just scratching my arms, because I was crying & really upset. That, I know, is considered self-harm. I don't do that much though. That particular time was just a ton of stress coming down on me all at once.

Anyways, today, I was arguing with my boyfriend & I was crying, but mostly holding it in. I was scratching my arms & legs, but they also felt itchy. Last summer, I got hives due to stress so I'm wondering if maybe the itchiness could be something like that? But is it still considered self-harm if I'm scratching an itch that is caused by the stress that upset me? If that makes any sense?

no, i dont considerate it self harm, BUT, if you need someone to talk to just PM me...
i would suggest trying to find a way to release your stress through other outlets like talking to friends or going for a walk/run...

Hey there,

I think the fact that you are scratching yourself due to anger is if it is your intention to harm yourself. But if it just due to you being itchy then i don't think it is.
Perhaps you can try talking to your friends or going out and doing things to help relieve some of the stress that you are under at the moment.

I don't think it counts as SH if it's down to being itchy. I know that I tend to get hives when stressed, not as bad now as a while ago; a while ago I'd be clawing at myself until I bled I got so itchy, and I don't consider that as SH because it was in an attempt to relieve a physical discomfort, even if there were healthier ways I could have tried to combat it (lotions, antihistamine, etc.).
