Unsure - August 10th 2011, 09:43 PM

So sometimes I pinch myself really hard (I keep my fingernails really long) when I didn't do something right or I am super stressed, it leaves little red welts all over my skin and whenever I've done it the next day I see little marks on my skin and feel bad. Is this self harm or am I just confused?

Hey Liz

Self harm is anything you do to cause harm to yourself intentionally. So to me it defiantly sounds like self harm. Does anyone know that you do this to yourself? If they don’t would you consider sharing this with anyone? The problem with self harm is that it can become extremely addictive. It’s a good idea to try and tackle this issue before it gets even worse than it already is for you.

Do you know much about self harm? It’s a coping mechanism, and as you stated in your post you do it when you’re stressed or you feel you haven’t done something right. It’s really important you find another way to cope with your emotions because hurting yourself isn’t okay.

If you ever want to talk about this in more depth, or talk about anything else for that matter, please just get in touch! Look after yourself and take care

Addictions like self harm start little, just like all addictions. It'll get worse if you don't find ways to cope....talk to someone. hugs<3

Hey there,

As said above, Self Harm is anything done to intentionally harm yourself: this does sound like it could be classed as Self Harm.
SH is a vicious cycle and will eventually get worse, it is very addictive and is hard to stop once it has been going on for a while. I would suggest taking a look at the alternatives thread, these will help to distract you while the urges fade; it is trial and error so there not all may work for you but hang in there and you WILL find one that does.
I would also suggest talking to someone you trust about this, such as a family member, someone that can help and support you through.
If you ever want/need to talk feel free to PM me,

Take care,
Charli
