"What? Do you self harm or something? Hahaha." - September 8th 2011, 05:05 PM

Well, I was talking to my form tutor the other day with my friend, and just randomly, my friend goes "God, Kate, you have so many bruises on your legs!" [This is because I punch/hit myself there.]

And then my form tutor goes "It's because she self-harms, isn't it Kate?" Bear in mind, she knows nothing (nobody knows,) and she was joking.

So I played along, saying "Nooo..." in a shifty way, which made her laugh, and she said, "Haha, of course you don't. Our Kate would never do that!"

So I was just sharing really. Haha.

But also, I was wondering. What do other people do in these situations?

You handled yourself really well in that situation. Before people knew about my self-harm, they all thought I was a "goody-goody" and nothing was wrong with me so I could NEVER self-harm. When they finally saw scratches on me, they were like.. "What's the matter Ms. Perfect, did things get too hard that you had to cut yourself?" and they laughed. Of course, I felt completely awkward but I pulled the "my cat scratched me" move and I let it go. Now that everyone knows, they don't say things like that to me anymore. They know how much it affects me.

I've had people say similar things as a joke to me too. My family a lot of the time. If they see a scratch or something they'll say something along the lines of 'you self harming?' with a smile on their face so I know they're joking. I usually laugh sarcastically, or say yes with dramatic nodding so they think I'm joking. Then I usually change the subject.

Hey lovely; when I'm in those situations I tend to do what you did and just..play along with it. You handled it beautifully. Stay strong lovely, you can get through this.

Sarcasm tends to be the easiest way out in situations like that. =P

I think you handled it really well.
Most of the people that I talk to know about it so they wouldn't say something like that, but in situations where people have, I'd just brush it off with an awkward laugh or something.
No one really makes those jokes anymore..

I was basically caught but I managed to play it off as a joke as well, so good call. I have done the same thing.
Sorry though, those suck!

I think that you handled it well. I usually try to do the same thing, sometimes I freeze up though and it makes it really akward.

Similar things have happened to me before, and like the others, I just tend to play along or change the subject.

You did handle it well. The only time I've really been challenged about it was when I went to a friend's birthday night out, and I still had steri-strips which poked out from under my sleeves. This one guy asked "What've you been up to, eh?" And gave me a really vile look. I didn't handle it well, I burst into tears in the bathroom and had to go home.....*shrug* These things happen.

Just a hop, skip and a jump.

Last time when someone joked about my scars as self harm I just went, yeah, I self harm in "mock" seriousness, then I was like, "Nah, I had a wrestling match with a cat" and went into a tale about a cat attacking me... they believed it.
