Question Group Therapy - September 25th 2011, 10:23 PM

So my therapist thinks it might be good for me to join a drop therapy thing for SH.

i was wondering if any of you had any insight on that?

some people have told me it's really helpful, but others (like my guidance counselor) have told me it's just going to be triggering and make me try new things.

Samantha, your guidance counselor probably believes in her good intentions, but she's not qualified to say what she did. Actually, contradicting your therapist was quite wrong and unprofessional, actually.

Trust your doc, she knows you best and knows what will work best for you. If Group is uncomfortable or "triggering', tell your doc, and don't go back.

PM me with the link of the post you'd like me to respond to.

I haven't actually been in a group just for people that self-harm, but I've been in 3 different groups during my time in counseling. I've found them incredibly helpful, even though they weren't strictly for self-harm. It was nice to be able to meet with a group of people close in age and just talk about things going on. I can understand the thought that it can be triggering, but I also believe lots of things are triggering when it comes down to it. It's nice to have a support group that knows exactly what you're dealing with and can help you through it. If you end up joining it, I hope it goes well for you! If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to PM me.
