My mom and i decided that i should start therapy or counseling. my mom does not know that i am a self-harmer. I know that when i start im going to tell the counseler because i want to stop and ive tried several things and none have worked so far. But my main point is should i tell my mom or wait until i start counseling to decide that?

If she has already agreed to take you to a counselor, it shouldn't come as a shock to her if you tell her.
Then again, it would be better if you met with the counselor first and let them explain about the best way to open up to your mother about your problem. You'll let her know soon either way, right? |

In this case it's really up to you. My counseling professor told me that self harm isn't something that a professional would be required to tell a parent (as long as it isn't a suicide attempt). She did say that the professional would encourage you to tell your mom either on your own, in a session, or have the counselor tell her for you if you really couldn't do it. If you aren't sure how to go about it, telling the counselor first might be helpful. If you think you can tell her first that's fine too, a counselor would encourage you to tell her on your own as a first resort anyway.
