Getting Rid of What I Use to Cut? - October 31st 2011, 02:21 AM

I was just thinking about how it may be easier for me to stop cutting if I get rid of what I use to cut. Does anyone think this could help?

It definitely can stop some of the more insignificant harms.

It's easier if you do it yourself. Don't let anyone force you into it. When I gave up cutting for a year and a half, I gave my favorite blade to the person I trusted and loved most. It was huge for me. but then I found a new blade this time when I started cutting again.

Re: Getting Rid of What I Use to Cut? - November 1st 2011, 08:07 PM

When my family first found out I cut, they wanted me to give them my razors, I told them I threw them out, I had thrown the one I had out, but, I didn't want to give it up and I feel kind of bad for doing it and getting more of them but I feel like that's why I just went and got more of them in the end, because I wasn't ready to give them up.
I want to throw them out but I'm not sure if I should tell my family I'm going to do that or how. I have no idea if they know I still cut, we've never talked about my cutting really, so I'm not sure if it's something I should just do and not tell them, or if it's something I should do and tell them.
Because of the ways they act at times, I think they know I have continued to cut, but they never bring the topic up and I don't want to because I don't want them worrying if they don't already know.

One of my friends gave me their blade. I know it was a huge thing for them. They told me to keep it until they were ready to deal with it, and until they could stop on their own.
I think it would help you to throw it away, or at least put it somewhere that it would be hard for you to get it.

This may or may not work. As Santa said, when you have more insignificant urges, it will make you stop and think if what you really want is to cut. However, if you DO want to cut, you may resort to less "safe" or sterile methods/weapons.

If you want to stop, though, then it is worth a shot.
Good luck

Some people find it easier to stop self-harm if they get rid of their "tools", if you think it'd be easier for you, then go for it. Just make sure if you're 100% ready to stop self-harming that you won't go and find other items to self-harm with. Good luck!! <3

It helped me for a while. But then the person I gave my razor to stabbed me in the back and I went back to cutting...

I'm thinking I'll go through with getting rid of them.
I'm just wondering if I should tell my family or not.
Like I said, I think they may know I still cut, but they may not because it's never discussed. I want to tell them if they know, but if they don't know I don't want to worry them but at the same time, I want to let them know it is something I am trying my best to give up and let go of.

Try giving what you use to a friend. It worked for me, I gave my Razors to my friend Sarah and told her to never give them back until 19 hours were up, When I asked her for them I didn't know why but I didn't want to cut anymore.
Try it. It might help

I don't have a friend to give them to...it's something I keep to myself...

If you think it'd make you feel better to tell them, then do that.

It never helped me. I found anything I could use like my school ID. I sharpened the edges and started cutting with that. I also found myself using more dangerous objects so just be carefull.

Thanks you guys, your replies really mean a lot to me.
I'm still not sure about telling my family yet, but I'm going to go through with getting rid of them.
I'm hoping it will help.

Good job on getting rid of them. Try to put them somewhere where you won't be able to find them again. I hope it helps you that you won't have your "tools" anymore, and good luck on starting to be SH free!

I've always thought of it as a more symbolic thing. Because like other people have said, there's no way to get rid of every sharp object in the world, and so in the eind it boils down to whether or not you chose to do it. But getting rid of the tools is a definitive step forward, and it can make you feel pretty proud of yourself and give you strength when you want to find other things to use.

Be very careful when considering this. In 3 days, I'll have gone 2 years without cutting. I still freak out about not having my razor anymore. It was like my security blanket to keep it. Of course, everyone is different, so maybe you won't have anxiety over it. Good luck!
