Unhappy I want to stop but... - November 10th 2011, 01:13 AM

I have a locket I wear every day...with my razor in it. I'm scared with out it. I haven't cut for 11 days but every day I fiddle with my necklace more...

Hey there Jessi,

I can understand where you are coming from. I think that most people who are struggling with self harm are afraid to let go of their tools however you can do it. Giving up your tool will definitely help in the recovery process. It will be a big step to take and I admit it is only something you can do when you are ready however I think the fact that you posted this is proof that you are ready or close to ready to give it up.

Now, the thing to remember is that self harm and your blade have become your best friend, it has become the thing that has 'helped' you through the tough times so of course letting go of it is going to be heartbreaking but it is not going to be the end of the world. Once you do it every day will get a little easier. Yes, you will have your bad days but things will get easier over time.

Is it possible for you to get rid of the blade but keep the locket? That might make it a little bit easier to do.

Have you looked at the alternatives? If not I am going to link you to that: Alternatives to Self Harm - TeenHelpWhenever you are feeling the urge to self harm try looking at the alternatives. Over time you might be able to find some things to replace the self harm. It is going to take time for the alternatives to kick in but don't give up because they can work.

Do you ever journal? If so I suggest that you try that because journaling is a great way to vent and it can help you figure out what your stressors are and if you can get down to the bottom of your stressors you can slowly work on finding solutions. Do you know some of the things that are causing you to want to harm yourself? If so maybe you could write them down and try to work on finding some solutions/coping skills for them?

Do you have any people you can talk to about the things going on in your life and your self harm? If so I would really recommend this because it can be really helpful. Being able to talk to people and find a good network of support is a great thing. It helps you not feel so alone and it helps to see that you are loved.

Have you ever considered seeking counseling for the things going on in life? If not maybe you could look into this avenue? I know it might be scary reaching out to a stranger but over time you can get on to better terms with this person and they are no longer a stranger and a counselor can really help you develope the tools to better cope with things in life instead of turning to self harm.
