Depends, what kind of doctor did you see? A GP can't do much more for someone who they feel is depressed than put them on an anti-depressant. If you want somebody who can help you quit self-harming, you should probably see a therapist, considering they're more about treating things without medication.

Most doctors and hospitals aren't capable of treating self injury and mental illness, really. They can prescribe medications, but that's usually about it. You do have to go to a counselor of some sort if you want that kind of treatment. There are specialists in cognitive behavioral therapy, and that usually helps with self injury in conjunction with anti-depressants. Talk therapy is also rather effective, but only if it's with a professional.
