Stuck - December 15th 2011, 12:47 AM

Hello Everyone,

I know I must be getting annoying by now with all my threads. Sorry!!!

I don't know where else to turn. I was in school today and all the stress is really getting to me. I am trying really hard not to cut but every time another situation comes up and the urge comes back. I sit there and I always ask myself the same question "Why can't I just cut" I always tell myself that its would be okay if I cut but then another part of me is saying NO NO NO NO.

I am stuck I don't know what to do...

Hey Blaine.

Don't apologise for posting another thread. The site is called TeenHelp for a reason - that's what we're here for, no matter how often you need it.

I know that feeling stressed can lead to thoughts of wanting to self harm, but remember that they're just that - thoughts. You don't have to act on them. You have the ability to relieve your stress in healthier ways, to direct your attention elsewhere and avoid hurting yourself.

When you start to rely on self harm, you find ways to justify it in your mind - 'It was just one cut... I'm in control of it... I won't let it get that bad.' - but the truth is, you're only a step away from losing control of it. You never know when you'll go too deep, or it will get infected, or any other number of things that could happen. You need to try to convince yourself that these thoughts are not you, and you can overcome them.

There's part of you saying you shouldn't cut, and you need to listen to it. What are some reasons you shouldn't cut? When you're feeling triggered, just remember them, and remind yourself that this is one battle that you can win. Do you have a strong support network? That can really help you through this.

I think you know what to do - the right thing. Self harm doesn't have to ruin your life, or even be a part of it anymore. You're stronger than this.

Take care.

Hi there :-)

Firstly there is no need what so ever to say sorry to use for posting on the forums. We want you do post, we want you to reach out, we want to be there and help you as much as we can. So well done for posting here, that's a really great and positive step in the right direction.

You need to listen to the part of you which is saying No. I know that when you're in that moment, you're upset or angry, you feel low and you feel and honestly believe that you want nothing more than to hurt yourself, that it is hard to beat those urges and those thoughts. But you can beat them. Yyou have to work at it though and you need determination. You need to do what ever it takes to keep yourself distracted and safe unntil the urges lesson and start to fade off. Cutting yourself isn't, in the long term, going to make you feel any better and it;s not going to solve the underlying issue as to why you self harm. But it might leave you with scars forever and ultimately could leave you in a worse place if you got 'addicted' to it.

Distractions often play a massive part in a self harmers recovory. Distract yourself until you don't even know that you are distracting yourself, read until you fall asleep with out knowing it, scream the rooftops down, cry until your tears are all gone, walk until you're too tired to go any futher, dance and sing until you feel happier, talk to someone, do what ever it takes to keep yourself safe because you beating the urges to hurt yourself is what is going to get you through this and to beat self harm.

I know it's hard for you but you can do this. You CAN overcome self harm and you don't need to live and rely on self harm to help you get through each day.

I hope this helps. Stay safe.
Jessie

Good job that you go through it. And like the mentors have said. Don't worry about how many times you post. If I counted how many times I posted total since I started here at teen help (which was EONS ago) i'd probably be in the 4,000's or something--and if it helps you then more power to TH.

I'm really glad you managed to get through it without hurting yourself. And you did it this time, so you know you can do it the next time too, right? Good luck with it all.
