Exclamation To anyone thinking of self harming - December 27th 2011, 02:10 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I used to read these before I started self harming - just to see that I wasn't the only one hurting, so I'm guessing there will be some more people like me reading this. This is a message for you.

It isn't worth it. I thought I would just do it once because of the one time I was upset. It will never be just once. It may not seem addictive but I promise you it is, it becomes how to you deal with anything that goes wrong. Whenever the smallest thing goes wrong you will think of it. The biggest problem I found was when I was a school and I really, really wanted to self harm but I was in class so I couldn't. I couldn't pay attention to the lesson, I couldn't think of anything else. It's actually quite scary. That was the first time I realised I had a problem.

I loved the way it felt and having the secret of it, having control over something in my life. But then you have to spend you time worrying about someone seeing. Games at school is a big problem, you can't keep skipping the lesson without someone noticing (something I wish I had realised before)

I haven't been self harming long. I was lucky enough to realise I had a problem early on but I am still trying to stop now. I did honestly think to start with I could just throw them away and never worry about it again. You can't. I found myself wanting to self harm even when nothing was wrong, it became a way to reward myself because the only time I felt good was when I self harmed.

If you are reading this and want to cut then please don't. You will still have the same problems you have now but you will have self harm as well to worry about. It doesn't make it easier. It doesn't make everything go away. You need to find a way to deal with the problem that make you want to self harm to begin with. I haven't spoken to anyone about this but you could try speaking to a friend if you feel comfortable doing that. I've found ranting about your problems here can really help!

This is just my story. Everyone else's will be different but these are somethings I wish someone had told me before I started. On all my time here I never saw anything like this so I really hope it will help someone.

Hugs x

Hugs to everyone

I really wish I had seen this before I started cutting. It's so true...

i used to cut...you are completely right!!!! i began when i was nine and just recently stopped. it is addicting and becomes your only way to escape the pain. you are not alone. you are very lucky for realizing sooner rather than later. at first it feels like its numbing the hurt but in the end it turns into a bigger problem than you started with. i agree with you 100% and i know it took a lot of courage to share your story.

Thank you for posting this. I really wish someone told me all of this before I start self harming because it is true. It is such an addiction, and even if you think you are doing it once, something makes you continue and then you become addicted and it's so hard to stop. I hope someone else reads this thread and decides not to start self harming, because it changes your life so much.
