Scars. - January 5th 2012, 07:04 PM

So I have a lot of scars all up and down my arm. Some are pink, some are white. They are all still raised which means if someone touches my arm, they could feel each one in detail. They make me really self conscious and they've been there for over a year now so Im really scared they're gonna stay forever.

I'm nearly 9 weeks self arm free and i do not plan on doing it again. What can I do about these hideous scars? Should I bring it up with my therapist or a regular doctor?

Hi there.

I don't know how deep your cuts have been so I don't quite know the extent of your scaring. Ones which have needed medical treatment such as staples or stitches might scar more and longer and might never completely go. But scars do fade and some do go and it has only been a year since you did some of them so there's plenty of time for them to fade more yet.

My GP has spoken to me about having skin graphs. If you're scars are that bad this might be something you can look in to or talk to your doctor about. If they're not that serious there are other treatments too! You can buy products over the counter such as bio-oil etc. You can also buy types of plasters which (I'm not sure what!) have something in them to reduce scaring although I think they might be a little pricey. I think it might be like Silicon gel sheets. You could look in to scar removal cream. There are also pressure dressings which might help and I think there is even medication, but I'm not positive about that. You could also try buying some special make up for them too.

It'd would be worth having a look in the chemist and perhaps talking to the pharmacist there too

Take care,
Jessie

Hey lovely!
Well done on going so long without SH! You're doing so well!

As for the scars... Well chances are, if they're deep then they won't ever fully go away. But they will fade, and will continue fading for a long time
If they're bothering you, there are things you can do to fade them faster. I've heard lemon juice works well!

Keep this up, you're doing amazingly <3

You could try a few things theres Palmers cocoa butter body lotion it helps scars and helps improves marks , it's rather cheap to buy, theres also bio-oil which others have suggested, I use rescue oil - its like bio oil just the cheaper version.

The scars will fade but they'll be there forever. I ended up getting a tattoo over mine to remind me that SH has longterm consequences and there are better ways to deal with problems.

For makeup, I'd recommend Dermablend. I'm not sure if you can get it where you live and it's a tad pricey (mine was $40 for a little tube) but wow that stuff works. And you only need a little bit. I use it on my arms when they're looking kinda gross and it works like a charm.

"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote,
“Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything.
He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."
