Gonna Break - January 6th 2012, 12:15 PM

I've gone maybe two weeks without cutting, but.. I can't take it anymore. It's been my coping method for over two years now, and I can't find anything else that works. I need it to get through the day. I don't even know why I'm posting this... I guess to try and find people who can relate? Gah... Sorry for bothering you guys.

Hi there.

Firstly you're not bothering us. We're here to support you and we're here to listen! I'm glad you've made this thread!

I know it's hard to beat urges, I honestly do. But you are in control of your actions and the only person who is going to make you hurt yourself and the only person who can stop you from hurting yourself, is you. I know it's hard, I do and I know the pain and how it can make you feel so overwhelmed you just want to cry and you feel like you're going to explode. But if you're ever going to get out of this and become self harm free and live a life with out it, which I believe deep inside you do, then you need to beat it. The only way to overcome it, is to beat it as hard as that may be.

So, when you have urges, you have to do what ever it takes to distract yourself until the urges pass, baring in mind, everyone finds different things useful. Try talking a look at the sticky thread of alternatives to self harm. Experiment with different techniques because not everything is going to help you but there will be things which do help you, it's just about trial and error. I've heard of two techniques before which I think are good. The first one, which I have tried is where you snap a glow band and you're not allowed to hurt yourself until it stops glowing which is normally at least eight hours later. This is good because you can buy ones which are like a necklace and bracelets ones. The other, I think this is right, is where you get a jar and fill it with water and glitter and you're not allowed to self harm until the glitter has all settled. I haven't tried that one myself but it might be worth the shot.

It may be that at times you just feel like crying can help release emotion but it might mean feeling the pain, but like I said, things word differently for everyone. So maybe you also could think about trying to just cry or scream or hit a pillow when you have urges until the urges pass.

Just remember, alternatives are just distractions. They're not going to stop you feeling the way you feel in the long run but they can help you in the short term! This is clearly an on going thing which is why I think for you to overcome this, having support might be good, such as therapy so that you can work through the underlying issues and help you find new ways to cope and help you to deal with issues which may arise you in the future, to prevent you from slipping back in to self harm as a way to cope with what is going on.

Just remember you're worth more than self harm and ultimately, as much as you hurt yourself, it's not going to get rid of what is making you feel so low and causing you to want to self harm. You can beat this so keep fighting!
