my 10 yr old sister cut herself - January 26th 2012, 07:08 AM

When i asked her why she said she wanted to see what was so cool about since i do it so much. I feel like a horrible older sister. What should i do?

We are all born for love. It is the principal of existence, and its only end.

I know what you mean, My sister did the same thing at that age just cause she said it looked cool and she wanted to act like me...
My best advice is to try talking to her. Tell her it isn't something that makes you cool. Show her a better way, a way that you wish you were taught, and maybe she will understand and won't do it again.
I hope this helps in some way...

Hey Jessica.

I can understand that this must be tough for you. Unfortunately, sometimes people - especially children - can feel the urge to do something just because they're curious, or under the idea that it's 'cool'. It sounds like this is getting to you, so I wanted to say that if you feel responsible for this, try not to; unless you actually encouraged her to cut, you shouldn't blame yourself for this.

As Cynthia said, I would try talking to her. Explain to her that it's not a healthy coping mechanism, nor a good habit to form. Tell her it's a way of dealing with emotions (albeit a negative way) and not something you do for fun or because it's cool. If it comes to it, it might be worth getting your parent/s or legal guardians or whoever takes care of her involved, so that they can make sure it doesn't happen again.

I hope things work out well.

Hey there,

I'm really sorry you are having to go through this at the moment. Children sometimes do things becuase they think it's cool or see it happen somewhere else and want to see why the other person does it. Don't blame yourself for this, you weren't to know that she was going to try it.
I strongly suggest talking to her about it and explain thats it's not good thing to do and perhaps explain why you do it. As Sidhe said, if it comes to it you may have to tell a parent or adult you trust about this.

If you ever want/need to talk, feel free to PM me
I hope this helped,
Take care

Hello, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this.

Firstly, talk to her and explain how it isn't cool and how you wish you didn't do it. Don't get mad at her and remember to highlight all the negatives of SH.

You can not blame yourself for this, children are easily influenced. She may have wanted to try it for other reasons and is not telling you all of them.

Finally, it may help to tell a parents or adult if she cuts again. I would keep a close eye on her, but I don't think it is needed to tell a parent unless she does it again. That's my opinion anyway.

Feel free to PM me, I hope everything works out well
