Wanting to cut - February 13th 2012, 10:12 PM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I have been free of cutting for two years now.
I JUST came out to my mom as being a lesbian.
She flipped out.
She's barely talking to me now and I feel like a HUGE disappointment to her and I never wanted to disappoint her. I'm so depressed about this whole situation that I've been holding a razor in my hand for 20mins now and I just feel the urge to put it to my skin and make everything stop. I can't take this anymore.

While your Mom's reaction to what you said wasn't appropriate, realize for her it's something she probably wasn't expecting. It doesn't mean you're a disappointment or that she's let down by you. As with anyone, news you weren't expecting takes a while to really digest. While she may have reacted harshly and in the moment, down the road the two of you will hopefully be able to sit down and talk it all out.

You were really brave for telling her and remember, you've gone two years, you can go two more.

I can promise you, she doesn't hate you. She may have said awful things but at some point, we all react "in the moment" and later realize we regret what we said and/or did. No matter what happens, she is your Mom, and it'll count for something. Hopefully down the road she's able to reevaluate and approach things with a clearer head.
