I'm just curious as to how many of you have used the alternatives thread, and if so to what extent. So please respond to the poll, and feel free to also reply to the thread.

I've used it a few times. Mostly I've skimmed over it and linked it to people when on HL or LH, or just giving general advice.

When I was really struggling with SH back in 2010, I was referred to the alternatives thread and I read every single one. Then I started using the alternatives that I tried over and over again. So I pretty much have the list embedded in my head and I don't have to refer to it. Now that I don't need it, I just link it to help other people.

It's weird actually, how I'm always giving out the link and stuff but I've only gone over it a few times myself. I guess that's because I've got lot's of my own things from hospital and my mental health worker though. Maybe I'll look through it a bit more

The ones I find helpful and use regurally are:
Listening to music loudly and singing along
Taking a hot bath
Make a cup of tea (I like hot peppermint tea)
Play solitaire
Read a book
Browse the forums
Learn HALT signs
Make funny faces in the mirror
YouTube funny videos (I reccomended corgi pool party and pandas on slide and one me and my friends made: nerds at the mall)
Play with my dogs
Read the bible and pray
Meditate (I reccomend the budhist meditation music on YouTube)

These I don't think are on the list:
Put scar cream on my scars and remind myself how if I am strong then they will go away
And im not trying to be weird or pervy but masturbating actually really helps

Like Jess, I link people to it a lot, but i've only ever looked over it a couple of times. I don't really have a reason for it xD I guess I just have my own ideas to distract myself. I should probably look at it more.

I have used it a couple times. I always forget about it when i need it.

From day one I talked about getting out
But not forgetting about
How all my worst fears are letting out
He said, "Why put a new address on the same old loneliness?"
When breathing just passes the time
Until we all just get old and die

Re: Alternatives. - February 18th 2012, 08:11 PM

I have only looked at it once or twice and that was when I started like 4 months ago. I don't really use any of them not that I don't think they work. Its just once I say Im going to do it I find that nothing can really change my mind. I guess I should probably look at them more though!

I have a print off of the alternatives thread. Sometimes just reading it helps, but I have tried quite a few of them.

I mostly link it, but I have read over it a few times.

And here you are living, despite it all.
