I had stopped... - February 19th 2012, 06:28 PM

So I use to cut but I decided it wasn't worth it n didn't help the problem... I haven't down it for almost 2 months... But today I was pushed over the edge and did it again...worse than ever before. At first I didn't feel it so I thought I just scratched myself bu than I looked down n blood was flowing down m arm... I'm obviously not over the cutting if I can still be triggered...

Hi there.

Firstly it's great that you've come to us for some support. I also want to say how well you have done for being two months self harm free. That takes a lot of strength.

Recovery is hard and actually, I think it's pretty fair to say that most people have a relapse in recovery. You can either take slipping up and think about it is a negative way and how you 'failed' and you're 'not over self harm'. Or you can use it in a positive way. Remind yourself that even though you had a relapse, you were actually two whole months self harm free which is, to be fair, pretty incredible. Don't think about it in a bad way, use it to help you. It's not about the slip but it's about picking yourself back up and starting over.

I know it's hard to see it that way, but having a slip up doesn't mean that self harm is you, you have failed or you are never going to beat this. Because you can, and you will. It's just going to be hard work and take time, but you can sure get there.

Do you have any one to talk to? It might be good to talk to people while you're going through this rough patch, just to have some support. Whether 'people' is being us here at teenhelp, friends at home, family or even a teacher etc. People care about you and it's okay to have some support behind you.

I also just want to encourage you to take a look at this list of alternatives to help keep yourself distratced when you do have urges. Not everything will help you so it's all about trial and error. Don't give up when something doesn't help, keep on trying different things.

Just hang in there. It's okay and understandable that you still get triggered, there's nothing wrong with that but you need to keep on fighting through when you get triggered and have urges. The only way to overcome this is to beat it so keep on fighting. You're stronger than this and you're worth more than the pain you inflict upon yourself.

Take good care of yourself,

"Only in the dark, can you see the stars..."
