Breaking the skin or not. you're cutting and cutting is dangerous. Even if it has stopped bleeding please go to an emergency room anyway just to make sure it didn't get infected or anything. BUT, stop cutting. Please. It seems to help at the moment, but sooner or later, it won't.

Don't go to the ER. Go to a pshcologist, counselor, friend idk but talk to someone. Think of anyone ANYONE that would be sad if you died. That's how you stop because honestly, if this is happening, it WILL get worse, and trust me you don't want that to happen. It doesn't matter if it barely breaks the skin, it's still cutting yourself.

Hi Lia.
These responses are starting to get on my nerves.
I cut, I know where you are, and completely understand what you're asking. These people are saying "just stop" (no offense to any of you) but you can't "just stop." It isn't that easy. Cutting is addictive, it takes away the pain. I'm not sure if any of you have been in our position, but it's extremely hard. Please take that into consideration.

That being said, I do not support self-harm. I know I do it, so I'm probably being a hypocrite. You should try to seek help. Talk to a school counselor, close friend, parent, family member, etc. It's good that you are here though, its a great first step.

Onto your question: if you ARE questioning yourself and how long it bleeds, its most likely been too long. You have to use your own judgement, honestly. I don't think there's a specific amount of time, it depends on how much blood you've lost. If you start feeling faint or things out of the ordinary, definitely seek help. If you start seeing signs of infection, also seek help.
Again, I do not support self-harm, I just know where you're coming from.

Best wishes. If you want to talk, my inbox is always open.

Good, I'm glad that you keep them clean and make sure they don't get infected, etc. You might want to talk to your counselor about ways to stop and things like that. I'm glad you're seeing her and she checks up on you.
Also, in case you haven't seen it yet, if you ever feel like cutting, try some of these alternatives: http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f12-s...ves-self-harm/

Not to sound like an ass, but you can just stop, if you want to. I did, after 4 years of cutting.

This reminded me of something my psychiatrist said the other day. He was like " It is possible to get over addictions in one day. In my profession I meet a lot of people with alcohol and drug addictions. And they think that what does this doctor know about addiction. He just sits there and tells us things that are impossible. And then when I show them how the addiction has altered their life and what their close friends and family perceive them as, their addiction stops. In one day."

As for your question I totally agree with Lorra. If it bleeds a lot or doesn't stop bleeding after lets say 10-15 minutes, get help ASAP. Or if you break the skin too much and can see the yellow coloured fat tissue or something else below, then I think you might need stitches to close the wound. Get help ASAP.

And not to annoy you more, but check this out.

Some people can some people can't. It depends on the person. But saying that isn't going to help the OP at all so let's all just calm down and stop these kinds of posts.

I don't know if this has already been said cuz i stopped reading previous comments after they got triggering. umm anyways depending on the cut... if like you said, you barely break the skin and it's not on any major viens or arteries or anything and ur applying direct pressure? 5-10 minutes. on or near a major vein i would say 10-15 and an artery? get emidiate help... it might need to be cotterized to avoid significant bloodloss. if ur not applying pressure and just letting it stop on its own it will stop and start possibly a few times but the first time it should take about 10-20 minutes. Hope that helps...

This. You might take longer to stop - like you might stop, then relapse, stop, relapse, stop, relapse. But there WILL be a last time you cut. And then you will have stopped.

However, I do know how hard that is.

You asked how long a cut should bleed for, and there's no set answer, as it varies from person to person. But if it's still streaming blood half an hour later, that's not a good sign and you may need medical attention.

In the first aid class I teach, I tell children that if a cut or scrape does not stop bleeding within 15-20 minutes of pressure and rest, you should call 911 or go to an emergency department. Also, deep cuts where you can see underlying tissues and fat are cuts that need stitches or gluing and you should go to an emergency department or urgent care medical clinic.

There is no set time, and giving you one is pointless. It's the amount of blood that comes out that you should worry about. If you bleed for five seconds but lose a gallon of blood, you're still in a dangerous situation. If you bleed for an hour but lose a tiny amount, it really doesn't even matter.

That being said, I hope you do stop, I haven't cut for a couple of years and really regret ever having cut myself.
