Does this count as SH or an alternative? - March 6th 2012, 03:27 AM

My usual method of SH is scratching, but when I can't, I eat hot things. Like, spicy hot, not burning. Although I have done that.. But, does it count? I've always been confused on real SH and the alternates...
I deliberately just let it stay on my tounge and won't drink anything. I eat 'em one after the other w/o stopping.. Letting 'em burn.

I love you.... I wish you'd love me too...

I personly would say it is...
As it is deliberatly hurting yourself

Well, technically eating spicy food isn't harmful (unless you have some medical condition that might result in harm), but the real issue is what you think it is, why you do it.

Regardless of the 'Technical' or 'Clinical' definition, if you do something that's aversive to you with intent to cause discomfort/harm, it's still a problem.

The solution, of course, is to find other ways to manage whatever it is that's causing you to want to do these things.

If you're doing it as a way to torture yourself, which I could be wrong but it seems like you are because you are burning your mouth and denying it anything to help the pain, it's still considered self-harm.

Burning the inside of your mouth on purpose is no different than burning any other part of your body.

Your safety and health is the most important thing, so please, please be careful.

I would still count it as self-harm if you are deliberately doing this to harm yourself. I agree with the posters above, you should find out where why you are driving to hurt yourself and try to handle the situation a different way.

I definitely think it can be considered that way. If it causes you pain, of course. Just to let you know though, I wouldn't hold it on your tongue for too long. There are some foods so hot they can literally burn holes right through your skin. Just watch out.
