Question Please help - March 20th 2012, 11:46 PM

This is my life,
I self harm, not deep cuts, just pain. I do it a lot and I have counselling which is not helping. If I don't cut I get panic attacks, is this weird? I am depressed a lot, short or long bursts of deep depression, which can chase major self harm sessions, but I get depressed if I don't cut, Is this abnormal? And finally, I think I mentally self harm. Self harm is pain caused on purpose, and i purposely thinking of depressing thoughts of, death of friends or family, making me upset and cry, is that self harm in some way?????

I enjoy self harm and counselling is not helping, I don't want to stop... I was to go deeper, I want controlled pain....

Well, the whole thing there is 'abnormal', but you already know that. We have a built in self protective mechanism that prevents these types of behaviors, we rightly see them as self destructive. In your case (and in the case of S/I in general) that natural mechanism somehow gets turned off. The task is to turn it back on by figuring out what broke that switch in the first place. That's where therapy comes in...to explore the causes of the S/I and teach you how to cope with stress and take better care of yourself.

If the therapy isn't working, talk with the doc about that..the fact that it's not helping, and see what you both can do to make it more effective. Therapy takes time (you didn't mention how long or how frequently you've been going), but typically (and most especially with S/I) there should be real improvement withing a reasonable amount of time.

PM me with the link of the post you'd like me to respond to.

If you don't wanna stop nothing short of a straight jacket and padded room are gonna stop you from SH.

Why do you ask for help in your title but end your post with "I don't want to stop". I'm not trying to pick on you or be troll.

Your post sounds like your emotions are all over the map. Does your therapist say anything about this?

-Could you be bi-polar? Manic Depressive? Would medication help?

What steps have you take outside of therapy to stop SH?
