Question What is this called?? - April 2nd 2012, 01:30 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering, particularly on the subject of self harm, by the original poster or by a Moderator. The contents of this thread might therefore not be suitable for certain sensitive users. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

So um, I haven't told absolutely anyone this ever. I scratch myself. To the point where I bleed. I don't do it out of depression or anger. I do it when I feel I've hurt someone. Even when I was little I would press my fingernails into my hand when I got in trouble. Now it's worse. When I feel Ive been mean or rude, or accidentally hurt someone's feelings, I scratch myself with my nails on my arms or ankles. I've only done it a few times, but I think it's getting worse. I've never heard anything like this before, is it normal? Is it even self harm? What am I doing???

I've never done it, nor do I know what it's called. However I definitely think this constitutes self harm. I'm glad that you've identified it before it gets out of hand so you can try to deal with it.

I am not sure what this would be called other than scratching, but I can tell you this definitely is a form of Self Harm.
If you haven't yet, I suggest you take a look at the alternatives thread.
There are a lot of great distractions listed there to help you fight the urge when you want to SH and many people find them to be useful, including me.
The first few things you try may not help but there should be something listed that you will enjoy or could be a great alternative to help you when you want to SH.
Hope this helps.

Re: What is this called?? - April 2nd 2012, 08:51 PM

I think there's no other name for this but self harm. Basically, you're causing yourself pain and you're hurting yourself, so that is self harm.

People do it for different reasons; some do it to feel alive; some do it because they like the pain; some do it to punish themselves, as you said you do.

Try talking to the person you think you've hurt, right after you feel that you've hurt them. If they're a decent person, they'll tell you not to hurt yourself, and that everything can be forgiven. And it's true: there is no excuse for hurting yourself, no matter how hypocritical I feel in saying that.

The only thing that I can suggest is talking to somebody. A teacher, or a therapist, or a doctor or a family member or a friend. Rant and rant until you have nothing left. Write in a diary. Take up a sport where you get to kick balls around as hard as you like. Anything, as long as you don't continue to hurt yourself.

Please feel free to message me if you need to talk. Remember that nothing is wrong with you: you're perfect the way you are, everybody hurts people sometimes, and there is no good reason to hurt yourself.

Hope I helped
