Question Time to stop. - April 5th 2012, 01:42 PM

So today, I made a promise to myself, and my boyfriend, that I'm not going to self harm again. My only problem is, I've tried most of the alternatives that are in the list, and none have seemed to work so far. Does anyone have any other ways of dealing with it?
I've got rid of all my blades. I'm going home on Saturday, so I'll be keeping busy for that whole week, I'm just worried about when I come back here (I live in student accommodation 170 miles away from anyone I care about). I don't know anyone apart from the people I go to college with and they never let me get involved with anything they're doing. I always end up feeling lonely, and stupid, and worthless, ultimately leading to my self destruction.
But yeah, if anyone has any tips, they would be great.

Hey Becci,
First of all I'm really happy to hear you're committing to stop you SH. you know how hard it can be but if you keep holding strong you're going to beat this. SH may feel like the best way to deal with a situation at first, but as you know the after effects leave you feeling ashamed and more upset with yourself which makes you want to SH again and the cycle keeps going. One thing that keeps me going is telling myself "Thing will get better as long as I don't cut" I mean it's kinda weird and I don't always believe it.... but commit to a phrase that's going to keep you from SHing the moment. When you feel like you want to, tell yourself it won't solve the problem, in fact it's probably going to make things worse. Tell yourself that when you hurt yourself you won't become happier or healthier. Tell yourself you deserve better and that you won't hurt yourself anymore. It doesn't if you don't believe it at first, because eventually you will. it may seem a little silly or that it won't be effective, but trust me it helps.

What techniques have you been using that don't seem to work?
I'd love to talk more, my inbox is always open

Thanks for that tip I'll give it a go.
I've tried the butterfly project, writing, drawing, playing an instrument, singing, watching films, reading, drawing cuts instead of actually making them... I've tried loads of things. Maybe this one will help.

Another thing that helps is stimulating the area that you usually SH. Like running an ice cube up your arm or snapping a hair tie. Things that will send a sensation without actually hurting yourself. Sometimes I like to rub (gently of course) my finger up my fore arms. It helps a little and calms me down. It might work for you because I don't think the whole "distracting from it" technique is the most effective for you.
Leme know if you wanna talk more!!

Oh, I tried those as well, but wasn't satisfied with the lack of blood...
I've gone the whole of today without doing it though, which hasn't happened for a while
