Know anyone Under the age of 8 with a 'label'? - May 14th 2012, 11:22 AM

So, for my Childcare course, I need to give the parent of an under 8 year old a questionnaire about their 'label'.

Even if they have a child with a label, they would be helpful, but when answering the questions, think of the child when they were under 8.

If you know someone under the age of 8 who has a label, can you PM me please?

I would like to send you a questionnaire about the label and the effect it has had on the child's life.

I haven't yet written the questionnaire, but will be doing so soon.

Please can you give the questionnaire to the parent/guardian of the child so that they can answer the questions. Even if you say that Susan from school needs to have these questions answered, I wouldn't mind, as long as they answer it, please! Or even if you know the effects that the label has had on the child, can you answer them please, (but only if you can answer all the questions in detail)?

If you are unsure about anything, PM me!

But I need replies ASAP because this is part of my course work!!!

Thanks,
Molly.

(P.S. Sorry if this sounds rude or disjointed, my mood's a bit odd at the moment.)

And she turns up the music, to drown out her life.

22/12/2014 was the last date I self-harmed. The longest I have gone so far is 1 year, 2 months and 5 days. This time, I hope I can give up! New record: 1 year 6 months! Yay!!

I assume that because this is posted in the disabilities forum, you mean a "label" as a diagnosed disorder or disability that impacts the child's life because they are labeled that way?

Eat upon their flesh for fuel, and, through your determination and will, banish them to obscurity and a life of complacency and self righteousness that is the hell in which they live"

Yeah, that's what I meant. Sorry if it didn't really make sense!!

These are the questions that I would like answered:

When was your child diagnosed (Date – if possible – and age of your child)?

What was your child diagnosed with?

Did anything change in the home life of your child, to help them, after they were diagnosed? If anything, please give details.

What type of school or child care – if any – does your child attend?

Did anything change in the school life of your child, to help them, after they were diagnosed? If anything, please give details.

Has the diagnosis made any difference to the child care or school which your child attends? If so, please give details.

Do you think your child’s life has changed for the better, worse, or not at all? Please circle the face that best describes your feelings.

Is there anything else you wish to share with me?

Please can you let me know ASAP if you know someone who would answer these questions, I would be really grateful!!

Thanks,
RosieJ

I can answer this as I've been very involved with the care that my younger brother receives.

When was your child diagnosed (Date – if possible – and age of your child)? He was wrongly diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at the age of 9 months which would be 1994. He was diagnosed as being on the Autism Spectrum in 2008 (age15) He was then diagnosed with Epilepsy in 2009 and Kleefstra Syndrome in 2009 (age 16)

What was your child diagnosed with? He has been misdiagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and diagnosed with Epilespy, Kleefstra Syndrome, Asthma and he is on the Autistm Spectrum.

Did anything change in the home life of your child, to help them, after they were diagnosed? If anything, please give details. My mum started taking him to a playgroup for kids with Learning Disabilities. We also enrolled him in a special needs school when he was old enough. We all had to make sacrifices in order to look after him (My mum could only work part-time, I had to care for him during school holidays, we couldn't cry infront of him as it really upset him etc)When we found out he had epilepsy, we all got trained to use him rescue medication (Buccal Midazolam) and what to do in the event of a seizure. We basically just adapted our lives to fit around him.

What type of school or child care – if any – does your child attend? He went to special needs schools and now attends a course aimed at teaching people with learning disabilities life skills at a mainstream college.

Did anything change in the school life of your child, to help them, after they were diagnosed? If anything, please give details. Nothing changed as he was diagnosed before he started school, but all the schools that he attended were brilliant at catering to his individual needs. Some of the things that they used to help him were small classroom sizes (I think there were 6 in his class at school), Practising "life skills" - shopping for food, cooking, cleaning, telling the time etc, they used Makaton (a sign language) and PECS (picture exchange communication system - basically picture/symbols of things that you can use to communicate with someone)

Has the diagnosis made any difference to the child care or school which your child attends? If so, please give details. He now lives in a care home for people with Autistic spectrum disorders, which he probably wouldn't if he weren't diagnosed as being on the Autistic spectrum. It also means that his support workers are really good as they are specialised in one of his main problem areas.

Do you think your child’s life has changed for the better, worse, or not at all? Please circle the face that best describes your feelings.

No, but feel free to PM me if you want more info.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your coursework? It sounds interesting!
