Hey there! I personally don't have terret's, my younger sister does have terret's like symptoms, like the tick and such.

Are your parents supportive in helping you? I am almost positive that there is medicine you can get to help lesson your ticks and outbursts, so while you are at school, you can feel a little more in control. I hope that helps

I have symptoms similar to tourette's due to medication I take for other reasons.
There is medication you can take to help with tics, were you diagnosed by a doctor? If your tics are bad it should have been something they suggested.

They did suggest but what the medicine does it slows your heart rate and makes you tired. :P so I will not take that.

While that is your choice, I would like to point out that just because something is listed as a side effect does not mean that it will happen to you.
One of the medications I take (Risperdal) is used to treat tics in Tourette's and my heart rate is unchanged.

Are your parents aware of how much it bothers you? What are there reasons for them not wanting you to take it?

You should make sure they know how much it bothers you. Parents are supposed to want to help their children, but they can't unless they know that you need their help. You need their help because you don't have the resources yet to get the help yourself.

I'm sure if you explained to your friend that it isn't done on purpose but as a result of your terrets they won't be so mean, then again, it's been over 7 years since I was in middle school.

If you can, research some sources for them to get you help....and present the sources to your parents, show them that you have done the research and that you want the help.

Re: anyone else of terrets? - September 8th 2012, 04:17 AM

Tourette's is when a person suffers from tics. Tics are compulsory muscle movements, they can involve most any muscle in the body. Some people with Tourette's make sounds because of their tics, some have to make certain movements. Some people have to repeat certain sounds when they hear them, make specific eye movements, touch their nose, shake their head, etc.. The list of possible tics is endless and varies from person to person.
Many people with Tourette's have some sort of limited control over their tics, they can sometimes hold them back for a very brief period of time but when they do this the tics usually get worse. It's like holding back a sneeze, the longer you do it the worse the sneeze will be.

Having a tic doesn't mean you have Tourette's. There are some medications that help with Tourette's but there is no cure.

I think you should try to talk to your parents about why they don't want you to take the medication as well as gather some research and present it to them. I personally don't have Tourettes or even a diagnosed tic disorder, but I know what that's like since I've had minor tics here and there sparsely for years, and it can be hard to explain to someone that you have no control over it, not everyone understands that you may not have control over your actions for that moment in time. But just try to explain it to them if they won't let off about it, and if they are still mean about them, ignore them. Chances are they don't understand and just want to be a bully with it.
