anyone else on here blind/visually impaired with mental health issues - July 14th 2013, 12:21 AM

Hi everyone,
I'm new to teen help. I'm 25 years old and totally blind. I also deal with depression and PTSD from the family I grew up in. I enjoy supporting and getting support from others that are blind and have mental health concerns. I was hoping there would be some on this site. I look forward to making some new friends.

Hey Adel,

Welcome to TH!
TH has a few people that are Visually impaired/blind and I'm sure more people will respond with their experiences and let you know if they are also visually impaired and if they have struggled with mental illnesses.

I am totally blind as well and I struggle with depression and possibly PTSD. I've never been diagnosed because I didn't see a counselor until the middle of high school and we would spend sessions doing things not related to me getting help (she said I possibly could have PTSD). Now i'm in college and I get help from a counselor at my school so hopefully I will get help I need (because the counseling in high school was not very helpful, it was in some ways but not in others).

I was born completely blind, went from there to legally blind with an acuity of 20/800 in both eyes (seeing only colors) after a month I was born. Up until late 2011 (when I was about 15 or 16?) I had gotten IOL (Intraocular Lens Implant) surgery and it corrected my vision. My vision is still bad when it's sunny out. I am still light sensitive but I have the vision of an average person basically. I still run at risk of gaining glaucoma which is hereditary on my mother's side of the family. I was born with cataracts if that answers any questions. I was diagnosed with aphakia, scotomas and nystagmus.

I do not have any mental health issues but I would love to speak to another person on here that is VI/Blind.

Hi Cora,
Cool that you're totally blind too and dealing with depression and maybe PTSD. That's exactly what I have. I go to a couple PSR groups during the week that help and also managing an e-mail list for people with mental illness makes me feel less alone. If you ever want to talk off the site my e-mail is: samnelson1@verizon.net Thanks!

That is really cool you manage an email list.
I also find talking to other people that I can relate to very useful. Which is why I joined TH, one of the reasons anyways.
Now I'm stuck, hahaha. Smile.
Thanks for shortening my username, I might use that as my new one when I decide to change my name again.
I will consider emailing you offf the site, also, TH has a private message system where you can send messages, it is very much like email. The link to send me a message is in my signature. PM is the link you would click, VM would send me a message that can be seen by everyone I allow to see my VM's (those cannot be made completely private unless someone turns off their VM's completely).
