possible cfs - May 18th 2014, 02:12 PM

So I've been ill for a long time with mild symptoms that flare up every so often. Doctors just think I'm depressed and the physical stuff is just symptoms of that. However my mum thinks something physical is wrong because the physical symptoms were there long before I got depressed (I can't remember not having some of them, and my mum was taking me to a specialist, who was useless, when I was 7 or 8).

Anyway on the phone to me the other day my mum mentioned that my symptoms reminded her of people with ME/CFS. I looked it up out of curiousity and like everything I experience was listed as a symptom.

Here are my symptoms:

-I have fatigue, which is the main symptom. I have this everyday, although some days it is a lot worse for example after having an active day I will feel exhausted for a whole week afterwards. I thought it was normal that I was tired all of the time and just slept lots but my mum noticed it wasn't normal. Recently I have been having an 'episode' where my symptoms get worse, and I have been feeling exhausted after getting up and doing hygiene stuff and breakfast. Going out for an hour or two feels like I've done a whole day of busy activity.

- I get really bad headaches. I have been put on a medication for these, which works, but as soon as I stop taking the medication they come back, and also the dose had to be upped recently. I've had these for years and there's no known cause despite doctors doing tests. I also get an achey body.

- I get stomach pains a lot, and have symptoms of IBS, and have done since I was a young child. I am gluten intolerant but not celiac, and I've also been finding recently that other foods upset me as well.

- I have had sleeping problems for years, including bouts of insomnia and also sleeping but then not feeling like I've slept at all.

- I have food sensitivities, light sensitivity, sometimes I am very sensitive to loud noises and (this may not be anything to do with it) but I've found that alcohol affects me really negatively. Most students can drink regularly and I feel really ill if I drink more than once every couple of weeks.

- I have depression (diagnosed) and I have anxiety (diagnosed) and before I started taking medication I had panic attacks.

All of these are symptoms of cfs. I'm obviously not asking for a diagnosis, but how would I go about talking to a doctor about this without sounding attention seeking? I don't want them to think I just want 'something' to be wrong with me, I'm genuinely desperate because I've felt ill for so long.

Also, does anyone know of any ways I can cope with these symptoms that might help me feel better in the short run because I've been really struggling.

Thanks, sorry it's so long.
