I have sound sensitivity, too. The main things that help me are:

Avoiding eating MSG (they seriously put MSG into almost everything, and they have a million different names for it, so you'll have to get a list of pseudonyms). The MSG can take me from having normal ears and bring me to psychotic-super-bionic-hearing-freak where the sound of someone breathing across the room makes me so irritated I become angry.

Keeping my allergies under control so that I do not develop ear irritations or infections.

Keeping my general stress level as low as possible. When I get stressed out (For instance, if I haven't eaten for too long) my sound sensitivity gets so bad it is unbearable.

HSP space. I am a highly sensitive person, and we get overstimulated easily. For me, being overstimulated can lead to hypersensitivity. It helps me to un-stimulate if I lay in a dark quiet room for twenty minutes, as needed, when I am overwhelmed. Maybe de-stressing this way would help keep your noise tolerance at a higher level.

I keep a pair of earplugs in my purse and put them in when becoming enraged by noises is imminent. I can hear through them. So I just put them in and continue conversations normally as if nothing has happened. I have to add a warning to this, however, which is that earplugs and headphones cause germs to build up inside your ears very rapidly, because there is not enough ventilation. This could lead to an ear infection, which could make the hearing sensitivity even worse. So I use them for emergencies only and I reserve my headphones for situations when I actually need them, preferring to play the music I listen to on speakers instead.

I assume you know the cause of your sound sensitivity? If not, you should have it checked. It can be a symptom of a variety of things - everything from allergies to differences in how your brain processes sound. If you can treat the cause of it by going to a doctor, maybe you won't have it anymore! A good doctor should have good suggestions, too, which will help you manage your hearing problems and be scared by noises less often.

One more thing - when I am startled too many times (because someone makes a noise!) it really really screws me up, emotionally. I think what happens is that whenever I am startled, the stress hormone (cortisol I think?) is released into my system. Well, if cortisol keeps being released more and more times, I get more and more stressed out. The more stressed out I am, the more likely I am to react badly to situations.

So, maybe the reason you are scared all the time is because your stress level is unnaturally high due to being startled so often?

Though, then again, the same could be true the other way around. I would do research and ask a doctor how a distinction can be made between being scared all the time because of a hearing sensitivity vs being so hearing sensitive the numerous startles make you constantly scared.

I have a simaler problem i get freaked out when i am stressed or tired i freak out from loud noises and to many people. I have found that if i concentrate on one thing and ignore every thing else around me it really helps alot. Also laying down works some times but only if you can destimulate your self with out help. Also deep pressur such as some one laying ontop of you or heavy blankets or a heavy bean bag on your lower body really help.

I have the same problem, especially balloon's popping. They scare the crap out of me. Until I realized that its just a sound but it won't actually hurt me.
