Possible Tourette's? - April 16th 2010, 03:36 AM

Since I was in the third grade i've been having eye tics were I blink my eyes really hard and make a clicking sound with my mouth. Its kinda annoying but its no big deal...But lately ive been shaking my head and jerking my arms down, not violently or anything. My brother and my dad think that I am making it up for attention. My dad says tics cant get worse, is this true? My mom believes me although i think she also has her doubts. Its not like im doing it for attention.. I get these strong urges to do these things. And if I hold them in it makes me feel like im gonna explode inside! I am currently home schooled cause kids in school would call me 'twitch' and people would always say 'can you stop that? its so annoying' eventually i had major anxiety going to school. I enjoy being home schooled way more, so i can get my tics out whenever i need to. Im going to the doctors next month to see if i have tourettes. I just need help on how i was convince my family i cant help doing these things!

I'm not an expert on this, but if you are really concerned, I would ask your mom to take you to the doctor and see if the doctor agrees. This can at least give you peace of mind, and they might be able to help, with medication of some sort, or maybe some other treatment. I know that I'm not an expert, but I hope this helps.

Hey Colin,

The thing with disabilities is that people find it impossible to understand what you are going through because they have never been in your situation themselves. It would seem that there is very little publicity or information about the syndrome, which only makes it harder for people do build up understanding, and support you further in dealing with your difficulties. I'm sorry that your parents don't understand, as you say, you're not doing it for attention.

Admittedly, Tourettes syndrome must be very difficult to live with. Trying to keep yourself active, whether through sports or other activities is said to help remove your focus from the tics and onto something more constructive. Try keeping something in your hands like a stress ball to play with when you feel the tics coming on. Whether or not you get diagnosed with Tourettes this sounds like a very difficult thing for you to deal with. The doctor will hopefully be able to give you an idea of a diagnosis and different methods of handling the tics.

Feel free to PM me if you need anything. Take care.
Marie.
