Do you have a stutter? - August 22nd 2010, 05:15 PM

Just a couple of questions. You're welcome to respond even if you don't stutter, if you think you could throw something out there related to stuttering.
  • When did you begin stuttering?
  • Do you think there is a particular cause for your stuttering?
  • How does it effect you?
  • How do you cope with it?
  • Have you found any methods to help you with it? (:

i sometimes have trouble getting words out, its more when im frustrated or nervous or if im in a large convasation and theres lots of people, or if i get interuppted when im talking its nothing major though. i find myself having a little trouble getting my words out, not sure if it counts as a stutter or not though. as its only in those sort of situations.

  • When did you begin stuttering? It was first noticed when I was 6-ish
  • Do you think there is a particular cause for your stuttering? not sure, but I would say nerves or maybe related to me being born "tougne tied"
  • How does it effect you? not able to get into group conversations, can't have a spontanious responce, no one is willing to hang with me for long( male and female)
  • How do you cope with it? i try to talk slower but it has mixed results ( including some noted above)
  • Have you found any methods to help you with it? (: not really, but open to any suggestions

I don't have a stutter but I talk differently than other people.
Basically when I was little, I couldn't pronounce certain words haha.
Over time, it developed into a British accent.
Some people make fun of it, but most people love it.

I like this question
i've been stuttering since i was like 5
I don't really know why I stutter, it's just always been that way lol
My stuttering doesn't really affect me all that much cuz I never really to people
When I was younger (and more sociable) I learned how to keep calm in like all situations and when I'm calm I don't stutter

but I also have this kind of verbal dyslexia, where I rearrange the order of the words in my sentences without thinking of it and I've never been able to control that

Re: Do you have a stutter? - August 23rd 2010, 09:15 PM

I don't really have a stutter, but sometimes I do get a slight one. And often when I'm drunk, which is weird. I think generally it's because I sometimes try to talk faster than my brain is actually moving, I can be a chatterbox But I can't explain the drunk one. It was really annoying when I was out a few weeks ago because I was trying to talk to these French people in French, and I was finding it so ahrd to say what I wanted to say
I haven't figured out how I can deal with it yet, but soemtimes I try to slow down my words a bit.

Re: Do you have a stutter? - August 24th 2010, 09:13 AM

Wow, I really like this post

1.When did you begin stuttering?
2.Do you think there is a particular cause for your stuttering?
3.How does it effect you?
4.How do you cope with it?
5.Have you found any methods to help you with it? (:

1. I started when I was about 5, it came and it went, but now during my senior year, it's back.

2.Many speech pathiologist say it's because of being nervous, but i really don't think I am a nervous person. I really think it's just there.

3.It has made such a impact on my social life, many people tease me or they talk so down grading for how i can't speak, then don't know that your just like them, just can't talk as good. This is one of my main reasons I'm a shy person.

4.I normally just shrug it off when i get teased. To help with my suttering I like to pratice what I'm about to say over and over in my head.

5. Well, from pathiologist, I found that helpful suggestions like start overs, stutter on purpose (stutter out the first syllables quietly ex. ddou yyou wwant tto hhang oout), and give out as short answers as possible.

I have more, if anyone wants, Id be able to tell you more in a PM

Re: Do you have a stutter? - August 24th 2010, 01:03 PM

I don't stutter, but when I was away in MA, there was a kid there that stuttered and a couple of the other guys would mock him when he wasn't around or pick on him, that kinda made me feel bad because that's just the way he is and he can't help it. i talked to him and treated him like i'd treat anyone else, it didn't bother me that he stuttered and I was okay with it. I think he's a really cool person and I hate it when people downgrade someone because they can't do something such as talk as good as someone else, it's no big deal, no one is perfect and i think people should look at there own flaws before they go naggin at others, they might realize something...

I also get this. Especially when I'm reading numbers. Reading phone numbers and codes is hell!

I do not have a stutter on a consistent basis. When I do, it is usually caused by extreme nervousness, like some public speaking. It does not effect me too much. It's just like "whatever" and just move on. I take deep breaths whenever I get nervous, and that usually helps.

Kitteh I loves yous accent!!!

And I'm not sure if it's a stutter, but when I'm talking, my brain moves way faster than my mouth, so I often repeat words when I'm speaking like five times because by the time my mouth hit's a word, my brain is like five minutes away...

Re: Do you have a stutter? - September 4th 2010, 01:28 AM

I've had a slight stutter for as long as I can remember. It's pretty weird thoguh. It comes on out of NO WHERE. Like, not even due to nerves or who I'm talking to or certian letters/words... it just HAPPENS. It's pretty rare and hardly affects my life(most of the people I know don't even know about it) but it IS there and when it happens, I will stutter on most of my words for about a half hour and it can get kinda difficult. When it gets that bad, sometimes, I just breath and count for like 30 seconds and try to calm down(cuz I usually get really angry when I start stuttering), but that only helps a little bit.

Question One: Even since I was very very little.

Questions Two: Nope, my parents said I stuttered since they remember me first speaking.

Question Three: It made things really hard for me because I was never confident speaking outloud and I was always made fun of.

Question Four: .. bleh.

Question Five: Even though I stuttered, I also had a lisp. And both of those made me very self-consious about speaking, but I loved to sing.
So I joined choir when I was in sixth grade, and I began to sing ALL THE TIME.
After a year of choir, my lisp and my stuttering was completely gone.
It was amazing. I've heard of other people who lost their stuttering through singing too.

So singing definitely helps!

  • How does it effect you?I have to repeat almost every words that I said, even my mom can't understand me sometimes.
  • How do you cope with it?I always think first before I talk, though sometimes I can talk fast without stuttering

I don't have a constant stuttering problem, but I do have a hard time getting words out sometimes because of my nervousness and anxiety.
  • When did you begin stuttering?
I'm honestly not sure..
  • Do you think there is a particular cause for your stuttering?
Nervousness mostly, and my mouth doesn't move as fast as my mind..but once it catches up I completely lose track of what I was about to say.
  • How does it effect you?
It has made an impact on my social life and I have become more quiet over the years..
  • How do you cope with it?
I just keep my mouth shut..haha.
  • Have you found any methods to help you with it?
Not really :/

I sprained my jaw once and had a lisp... it comes back sometimes... you never know how much you use the letter S until you can't...
