What is your ability? - December 6th 2010, 10:49 AM

We've had a couple of these threads before, but here we go again.

Whatever your disability may be, and however it may effect you, what is your ability? What has your disability allowed you to learn to do better or increase your skills in?

My illness (disability) has helped me face my fears of hospitals Now i'm no longher afraid of them cause I visit them so often . It has also helped me come to terms with maybe having to have a surrogate mother (my tumors are affected by pregnancy hormores) an maybe having to have a donor egg because my chances of passing on the gene are too high! These are things that used to bother me , but now I see them as the norm (:

I can also spell (sort of) many complicated medical words
Neurofibromatosis
Craniectomy
Chromosome
Anesthetic
Skanky Hospital Food

All without a spell check ^^

I guess I get always got to skip PE because of my arthritis is that counts? and many other physical jobs. I see this as a good thing so I guess I count it as an ability D=

But proper abilities? I have none D= but I'm able to do a lot? O.o

My colour blindness allows me to see pretty much blues the best out of any other colour. I'm also very sensitive to light so in darker areas, I may be able to see better than others. I may also be able to distinguish certain shades that others couldn't, which can helpful in anti-camoflauge. It has also allowed me to learn what a certain shade is to others, such as many shades I see as shades of brown or gray, but I've learned which shade corresponds to which colour, so in a way even though my colour vision favours only one colour, I think it's pretty damn cool I can know what others are indirectly.

I also get to wear sunglasses or other tinted lenses in classes and exams, which can be pretty amazing especially if the glasses look good. Depending where I am, I can get people to dim the lights, such as at home while eating dinner, I dim down the dinner chandelier over the table so it's not blinding and stinging. It can allow for more candle-light dinners, which are always fun. I got the option of wear tinted contacts but I felt I'd lose them or damage them right away.

I can rip you off, and steal all your cash, suckerpunch you in the face, stand back and laugh. Leave you stranded as fast as a heart-attack.

I'm starting to realize that I can't hide it anymore and that it's nothing to be ashamed of. But it's hard.
