Does he have a problem? - September 16th 2012, 05:24 PM

My friend is obsessed with saving money, I know that doesn't seem like a bad thing at all but it's getting worrying.

He will keep every single receipt. He will keep receipts for clothes, food, cigarettes, everything. Once he gets home he will calculate everything he has spent, to the last penny.

He accidentally chucked out one of his receipts before he got home the other day. He was genuinely panicking. He ended up phoning McDonald's to ask how much a large Big Mac meal and McFlurry was. If he is out a single penny he will panic.

If he buys his mum cigarettes he will panic that he may mix up the receipts and not know who owes who money. I don't get why he doesn't just round the figures down If my mum owes me money I will just say "it was about 5" He needs every single penny.

He sometimes jokes around by saying he has O.C.D. but I think he may actually have a problem

Maybe he's having financial problems. Perhaps he previously had a problem where he kept over spending his money.

It might seem weird to you, but I as well keep receipts. I hate spending money. I always have to know where every bit goes.

Understand his side of the habit. He probably has good reasons.

I do the same. I staple the days receipts together and put them in a tin after writing the date on top and make sure I know exactly how much I paid.

I hate feeling as if I've lost money in some way, my mum owed me money and I had lost the receipt, boy was I panicking. I found it in the end though.

If it concerns you, you can talk to him about it.

Jay.

He has more money than me :') He checked his bank account a few days ago and he has a couple of grand. He received a lot of money from his nan's will after she died.

I think it's excessive and typical OCD type behaviour, but there are worse things than keeping track of money, really. You could confront him and maybe suggest at least getting it checked out but I don't see this as being a huge problem, granted it certainly makes his life more stressful.

Self pity will not rescue you.
Sometimes we have to save our own lives,
not because no one else cares, but because no one else can.

Life for you has been less than kind
So take a number, stand in line
We've all been sorry, we've all been hurt
But how we survive is what makes us who we are.

Dreamed up the maps, give me the charcoal and the paper
We invent paths they cannot see, and they're too scared to walk

Only after disaster can we be resurrected. It's only after you've lost everything that you are free to do anything.

I'm like this with money, unless I actually have to spend money I usually won't and I will keep every receipt I get and keep all my pennies. For me it's because I do not earn a-lot of money so in my case pennies make up a-lot. But it does sound as though your friend is being obsessed without needing to be given the amount of money he has in his bank. Maybe next time he jokes about having OCD you could say to him ' Yeah I think you do' and see what he says ?

Maybe it isn't as worrying as I thought.
