Sugar free cola - September 22nd 2012, 04:55 PM

I drink a lot of sugar free cola daily. Not because it's calorie free, but because I genuinely don't like the after taste of sugary drinks. Anyway, that's beside the point. I know there's a lot of negative heath effects and stuff, but is this a really, really bad habit and should I try to give it up? I've always been encouraged to drink lots of fluid, and since I don't particularly like juice and water, I found diet cola But I kinda "panic" when I can't have it, because it's become such a familiar habit.

I honestly wouldn't recommend it, the artificial sweetener crap isn't healthy, and I would even say less healthy than regular sugar. If you feel a pressing need to drink soda then switch to the kind containing cane or beet sugar (I don't think you're American but if you are, stay away from American soda that contains high fructose corn syrup.)

I enjoy having the crap with high fructose corn syrup, so I suppose I have a similar craving, just on the opposite end of the spectrum. Have you tried seltzer/fizzy water? They have numerous flavors- no sugar, no calories.

Soda is probably one of the worst things to drink when they tell you to drink lots of fluids.

Is iced tea common in the UK? That's mainly what I've switched to is iced coffee and iced tea.

Hi

My sister used to drink a good 6-8 litres a day (which was more because of her ED) which has resulted in her teeth needing a lot of treatment. How about just drinking juice? I mean, the variety of flavours is unreal.

Thanks for the ideas guys :]

I have majorly cut down on the soda, after it led to me feeling sick and making my teeth sensitive. I'm gonna give the iced tea and juice a go

When they tell you that you need to drink lots of fluids daily, diet soda and regular soda is hardly what they're suggesting. Artificial sweeteners are definitely good for you, and soda (whether diet or regular) has been found to actually dehydrate you rather than hydrate you, even if it is "fluid." To be completely honest, juice isn't even that great for you. It may have some vitamins in it, but it's just as high calorie as soda and filled with high fructose corn syrup which isn't good for you either.
I know you don't like water, but why don't you try adding some lemon juice to your water? I've always been bad about drinking water, but add some lemon or lime juice and it becomes a drug for me. It's the -only- way I'll drink water. You might also look for some flavorings to add to your water, such as Crystal Light, Propel (flavored water for the WIN!), Mio, etc.
If you want to try juice, you could cut it so it's 1/2 water and 1/2 juice - it cuts down on the calories and keeps your juice from being overly sweet. If you're addicted to the fizz, try mixing a little bit of juice (my favorite is fruit punch) with seltzer/soda water.
