Eyebrow & eyelash pulling.. - January 27th 2013, 05:07 AM

Not exactly sure how to describe it but sometimes my brows and lashes feel weird so I pull 'em. Sometimes I try to ignore it but the feeling doesn't go away. It probably started when I was in first or second grade. I've also caught myself pulling when i'm anxious (which is pretty much everyday).
I'm kinda surprised my parents or teachers never noticed this..

I know you guys can't diagnose me but could this be Trichotillomania?

I do that too. Although usually just my eyelashes. My parents DID notice, because as a kid and a young teenager I had no control over it and I would pluck out literally all my eyelashes on both eyes. I got in trouble but nothing constructive was ever done about it.

These days I don't do it to the same extreme. But I still do it, like you, when I'm particularly stressed or anxious. I often don't notice I'm doing it to begin with, and often the start is the place where my eyelashes grow from feels itchy to me. It's weird.

Yes, it could be trichotillomania, but as you know, we can't diagnose you. As with everything, you'll need to see a doctor for that. In the mean time, the distractions and so forth for self-harm work equally well, even though this is a bit different, it's still somewhat a maladaptive coping mechanism, so learning different techniques to deal with stressful thoughts and situations is likely to benefit you.

This is a form of trichotillomania. I actually have the same problem, and I have for as long as I can remember, although my case isn't too extreme.
My best advice is to find distractions for whenever you get the urge to pull. You can try going for a walk or run, calling up a friend, or cleaning. You want your distraction to be something with your hands, as sometimes I find I'll do it subconsciously.

And here you are living, despite it all.

I recently got a tangle because I fidget a lot but I can't bring it to school and I pull quite a bit at school. I was thinking about getting a spinner ring but I never wear jewelry and due to social anxiety, i'm worried about what people will say (or think) if they see me wearing a ring.
