Addicted to picking at skin - May 16th 2013, 11:19 PM

Especially when I'm stressed or excited, I pick at my skin. I pick at scabs, acne, mosquito bites, etc. on my arms and face and back and chest and neck. I can't stop! It makes my acne flare up and I have scars from picking at scabs. I know I have a problem, but I usually deny it in front of my parents when they yell at me for picking at my skin. I don't know how to stop or why this is happening. Does anyone have a similar problem?

My ex-wife use to do this all of the time (picked at her acne mostly). It's just a habit, and can be easily broken with another habit. I suggest that when you get stressed or excited, find something else to do.
  • Grab a yo-yo
  • Twirl a pencil in you fingers
  • Get some Baoding balls (you'll have to google. I can't post links yet)
  • Play with some silly puddy

The idea is to keep your hands busy with something else.Do this religiously for at least 30 days. You'll have that habit kicked in no time.

its believed to be called Dermatillomania. It is chronic skin picking. I do it on my arms. I am not sure what causes it etc, all I can say is you are not alone Google it, ask your doctor if there are things you can do about them, such as acne medication, scar creams etc.

I do something similar so you aren't alone. I pick at pimples. Maybe you could do things that keep your hands busy and whenever you start picking at your skin, sorta try and realize it and tell yourself "no". It honestly becomes a habit to tell yourself no and starts working. By doing that and keeping my hands busy, I'm a week free when I usually did it everyday.

Hope I helped. Good luck!
