Addicted to the computer? - July 11th 2013, 10:32 PM

My habits have gotten really out of hand, and I feel as though I am addicted to the computer. I know, it sounds silly. And I'm sure, if I worked at it I could stop. But it's just so fun, and I love this site, along with tumblr. I just never want to leave it. I know it will be here tomorrow etc etc. It's just so much fun. ahhh, help.

"I was never used to being happy, so that wasn't something I took for granted. You see, I was brought up differently from the average American child because the average American child is brought up expecting to be happy."

Oh goodness don’t worry lol=) I am prob just as addicted as you are=) In fact, I think every teenager I know is. I admitt, I do sometimes get worried about how I will do when I have a job and stuff because i’m used to always being online practically, but I think once the time comes i’ll be okay. I think we have better self control than we think we do with this. Just during times like this (summer break for me), there’s nothing TO do so we figure ah why not?

Hey Ellie!
I'm also having similar problems too- I'm way too obsessed with TH along with other sites such as YouTube. Anyways, I agree with what Julia said in her post that self-control will help you tremendously! I also think that if you try setting designated time slots to what hours you can/cannot use the computer will also help. Have you ever tried allotting time for a specific activity and only did that activity during that time? Anyways, a little bit off topic but time allotting will also help during the school year, if you are a procrastinator to tend to delay off doing homework or other things. Another thing that might help you is possibly try spending some time outside? I know, as a teenager myself, that teens generally use the computer almost all of the time when at home or probably using electronic equipment, such as an iPod or some tablet to surf the web. If you feel like your addiction is getting out of control, you could possibly try blocking the sites? I also had personal experience with this when my youtube addiction got extremely out of control, so I blocked the site and eventually got over my urge for it. I really hope this works for you as well! Well, I hope you find this helpful, and try it out!

Best of luck,
Rishy

While internet addiction is actually a recognized mental illness now (as of the recent DSM release), there are actual guidelines within which you need to fall. Most people, especially teenagers, won't cross that line into addiction, and if they did they more than likely wouldn't be aware of their problem. So personally, I think you're fine and just like the rest of us! When there's a wealth of knowledge and entertainment at your fingertips anyone is likely to fall victim to that black hole of "oh man, was I really online for that long!"

"Remember what you're worth
Remember you're worth fighting for
Remember you're not a punching bag
Remember you're not a doormat
Remember you are valuable
Remember you are repairable
Remember you matter
Remember they don't."

I'm telling you I was gonna post the a thread about internet addiction. As long as you're functioning in your life, I think you should be fine. The internet can be too fun sometimes I agree the only thing for me is that my dad punishes me when I'm on for long, and he restricts me instead of understanding.

Re: Addicted to the computer? - July 17th 2013, 02:14 PM

I think there is a difference in using the computer a lot each day and actually being addicted to it. Technology is becoming a big part of our daily lives and computers are a large part of it. For me personally I can spend a lot of time at the computer each day and other times not so much. I think there's a difference between spending a lot of time at the computer daily and enjoying having/using it and physically and mentally being unable to force ourselves to pull away from it, so much so, that it affects what we do in our daily life.

Life is for living, not for losing.

You are definitely not alone with this problem! Most teens are the same and 'spend all day in front of the computer' :P

Re: Addicted to the computer? - July 17th 2013, 05:52 PM

To my family I appear as though I'm addicted to the computer most likely but since I am capable of walking away from it and doing other things (when I'm in school my computer useage does not affect me attending classes etc.) I'd say it is just me using the computer a lot. I do a couple of volunteer projects online (I do LH, HL and I am a moderator here, plus I proofread books for submission on a website for people with print disabilities.) So, it is not me being addicted, it is just me enjoying using the computer and doing things I like to do: helping people and adding to places that have given a whole lot to me.
I believe it is an addiction when you get to a point where grades start to fall due to not doing homework and putting computer first, or when people start to lose close connections to those close to them and other similar difficulties start occurring.

I agree with this. To my family as well, they believe I am addicted, but I can however walk away real easily and maintain my friendships at an awesome level. I volunteer a lot and I use social media to reach out to others as well. Even though I'm not 18 yet to work at a certain company that has been helpful to me my whole life, I do lots of things for them and their programs/camps using social media and other forms of communication on the computer or telephone to reach out to others. Just 'cause you use the computer a lot does not mean you have an addiction.

If you do have an addiction - remember the most famous saying, "The first step towards success is admitting you have an addiction."

I spend really long periods on my computer but I can walk away from it and stay away for about fifteen minutes. My parents think I am addicted to my computer, just because I have it switched on all the time doesn't mean I am actually using it, sometimes I can spend quite a bit time away from it.

the girl who always seemed unbreakble finally
BROKE
the girl who seemed strong
CRUMBLED
the girl who always laughed
CRIED
the girl who never stopped trying finally
GAVE UP

she let her fake smile fade and as she did a tear rolled down her cheek and she whispered

' i can't do this anymore'
