Angry Picking at my skin - December 15th 2013, 05:53 AM

Hi, I have a really gross habit that I have been at for 7 years now...I pick at zits on my skin until they bleed, then pick at the scabs. I wear makeup to cover the dark spots and scabs on my skin, but of course no makeup really covers it all. How do I end this disgusting habit!?!?

I have that habit too, only instead of with pimples, it's with my scalp. One thing I try to do is remind myself that it does affect me in some way. For example, it may get infected, and now I can't dye my hair because you're not supposed to get anything in open wounds on the scalp. So, you can do something similar, like reminding yourself that it may get infected, then you don't like the dark spots or scabs.

Also, try and keep things with you that allow you to keep your hands busy, such as a stress ball, Rubik's cube, or something else that you can bring with you and fiddle with. That way if you notice yourself picking or get the urge to, you can switch to doing that instead.

If you have a friend or family member you trust you can ask them to point out when you pick (in a polite way), so you can stop doing it, since I know that sometimes I don't even realize I'm picking and maybe you're the same way. Eventually, you may start to realize it on your own.

Hi,

Like Dez said, something that could really help you out would be to keep your hands busy. I do this whenever I get an urge to cut myself. I'll pick up my yarn and start knitting. Or I'll make friendship bracelets or something, just to keep my hands occupied, and its worked out super well for me! Find something that not only occupies your hands but your thoughts as well.

You could also ask someone to politely point them out for you. I have my mom and my close friends point out to me whenever I bite my nails, and its really helped me kick the habit.

And just to keep your skin healthy, I'd advise you to wash your face regularly, just to make sure none of those zits or pimples get infected. Starting a regular routine could also be an incentive to keep your skin healthy and glowing, and make you less eager to pick at it.

I've been compulsively picking my lips for thirteen years, so I completely understand your pain. If you catch yourself doing it, I'd recommend that you take note of what you are feeling. It could be triggered by stress or perhaps boredom. You could try to take up knitting, or some other activity to keep your hands busy. Often times, people will engage in these kinds of behaviors in order to busy their hands. Good luck!
