Addicted to everything...? - June 21st 2009, 12:28 AM

Basically, I used to cut, and now I smoke instead because it quiets the urges. So, when I can't cut, I smoke, but when I can't smoke, I smoke pot, when I can't smoke pot, I drink. It sucks, because I often feel like I just have to have one or the other. I've tried to go completely sober before, and I just didn't like it. Sometimes it's a matter of just making myself relaxed, or I feel kind of numb otherwise. But I like to smoke cigarettes and pot (every now and then) and to drink, it's not always just that I'm like "Ohmigod, I NEED a drink", but when I get the urge to cut, I feel like I just have to replace it with something else.

I don't know. I really can't decide if I should count this as addiction or not. Does it really matter?

It sounds more like OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) try to busy yourself... even if its just going out for a walk... find some healthy obsessions to stick to in your down time instead of destructive ones.

Hey Shannon (:

It seems like you are going from one unhealthy coping method to another. In the end, each of these harmful behaviors will hurt you far more than they could ever help you. All they do is mask the pain and not get rid of it. When the effects wear off all that pain comes rushing back and you look for the next temporary escape from it. Thus continuing this cycle of self destruction. It would be far more beneficial to you for you to put your energy into something more constructive that will benefit you in the long run. Dealing with your problems rather than trying to run away from them will make a lasting positive change. Picking up a new hobby or finding a better way to release your emotions like writing a journal or a blog could help you deal with stress. Talking to someone like a friend, family member, therapist, or anyone you can trust might also help. You have options that don't involve hurting yourself. I think you should really consider trying something new because I doubt what you're doing now is working out for you. If you ever need someone to talk to feel free to PM me. Take care and good luck on finding an alternative that works for you. Beating any addiction is difficult but it is possible. You have it in you to overcome this!

Lots of love <3 Mimi
